Probably the most underrated game on Steam.

I have had this game going on two years now, figured I should review it.

The store page doesn't do it justice. People are put off by the idea that it's a roguelite [citation needed]. I think city building fans are disinclined to the idea of disposable villages. Problem is- it's absolutely fine. You really are not held hostage by an RNG or a bad spawn location. You can select the amount of struggle you feel like on the world map at embark time. You absolutely can roll chill or roll full noise psycho.

The mechanics are very meticulously designed and relatively deep. It's satisfying.

If anything, that itch you get where you want to restart a game because you understand a new mechanic or know a map better is directly scratched by the process of building a dozen villages over the course of a storm cycle.

In summary:
  • Graphics are beautiful.
  • UI feels well made rather than some Unity click-here hotspot powerpoint fiasco.
  • Balance is good.
  • Tech tree is fun.
  • RNG doesn't feel like an abusive relationship.
  • Sound design is great.
  • It's regularly exciting.
  • Very replayable.

In summary- 5/5 and screw the blight!

Very shallow dungeon keeper type game. Get it on sale, only about 10 hours of content in it. Graphics are cute.

One of the prettiest experiences I've had in any video game. Story was solid, art direction was solid, sound design was solid, plot was well paced. A respectable tribute to Stanislaw Lem. 10/10 would, did, done, loved.

This feels like is a proper video game! Hard to say much about it without spoilers. A lot of love and care went into crafting this experience. It's not what you think when you start playing it. It's a great story, adventure, and fun card battler. Doesn't feel paint by numbers like so many AAA through to indie video games feel. Sounds great, looks great, feels great. Highly recommended.

Absolutely gorgeous. Well made, well considered, challenging. Not playing it is letting your ancestors down.

I don't know what you call the graphical style. DF and Qud both do it.

WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE ASCIITHETIC BUT WE NEED A FEW MORE PIXELS SIR.

This has a few more pixels, shaders, UX enhancements, ...

It has an incredible soundtrack. How often do you hear that about one of these 'few more pixels' sons of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥?

Game has a deep and rich ecosystem. You aren't just rushing trinkets in a rogue world wishing you were back playing brogue. This is the real deal. I have accidentally'ed upon technology and spells in the wiki that seem bamboozling to me even after 62 hours.

TL;DR - if you are okay with learning a bit of muscle memory, if you are okay with a deep rich world that eschews sloppy sprite based novelty. This is the warm sauce in your ice-cream sundae.

Otherwise, maybe the cold sick in your ice-cream sundae.

p.s. I just killed an entire city and I feel a bit awkward about it a day later. Up to you.

10/10.
