I have been preaching the joys of these games for far too long. The Golden Idol series is now my favorite puzzle game series.
Take Obra Dinn and add a forced exploration of the scene (very helpful in making sure you don't miss something) and proceed to fill out case files.
Length wise the game only takes around 10 hours to beat if you're me or 8 if you're pretty good at puzzle or probably less if you're very good at puzzles. Does not overstay its welcome and wants you to keep playing.
If I can offer one piece of advice: watch the dates.

PLAY THIS

One of the neatest puzzle games I've played. The system of placing photos into the world gives a very Antichamber or Superliminal vibe. The story is very light, but it kind of works for the serene worlds you walk through and chill vibes in general. A pretty short game but the replayability seems pretty high as the solutions are always fun and interesting. Also you can pet the cat so that's great.
My only main gripe with the game come towards the end when a level is timed for you to get the solution. Every other level you can usually take at your own pace and I feel the timer kind of spoiled the vibes a bit.
Overall solid 9/10 from me

One of the most fun puzzle games I've ever played. The art style and the way the puzzles are formatted with old puzzles helping you sometimes when solving new ones makes for a fun time. I'd say my puzzling skills are pretty average and it only took me about 14 hours to solve every puzzle in the base game and DLCs completely legitimately and with no help (I lie, I brute forced a couple puzzles and used like 2 hints). That's way worth the price paid.

Overall 9/10 in my book, a few little UI issues along the way and a few of the puzzles feeling a little unfair in what they expect you to deduce from VERY limited information (or maybe I just missed something very important)

I want to preface this by saying I have yet to finish this game due to reasons explained in this review.

I was reccomended this game a few years ago by a close friend and I bought it but never played it. My friend then passed a year later and I still hadn't played this game. That was three years ago. I've tried every year on the aniversary of his death to try to play this game but I always end up crying and am unable to play anything.

This year was different. I worked up the willpower to play it and it blew me away. The art is retro-modern. A higher res 8 bit mixed with nice clean modern graphics (4 years old). But the story man. It sucked me in and didn't let go. The story hit a bit to close to the reason I was never able to play it originally as it deals with death and memories.

I hope to one day finish this game, preferably on March 30th in memory of Joel. But until then I have to reccomend it at least on the little bit I've played.

(One quick problem I have with it: The camera and controls can be a bit aggrivating at times but not enough to turn you off from the story.)
