The gameplay is short. You can 100% the game within 16 hrs. Recommend playing it on Mythic difficulty if you have played other turn-based strategy games. The game will only get challenging on the last mission.

Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is a “pure” turn-based tactic game. There are story and side missions (which you don’t have to complete but are required for 100%). Each mission gives you different equipment rewards that you can bring with you to the next mission. Other than inventory management, it is purely focused on turn-based gameplay.
The good:
Game mechanics: Your characters in the game don’t have armor. The game introduces “luck” and “stress”. When Your characters get hit, they will lose luck first. If their luck value is 0, they will then take damage to their health. Their stress level, which affects action points and weapon accuracy if full, can increase by enemy skills, getting hit, and the status of their teammates. Don’t put all your characters together sometimes. It becomes tricky not to die when the whole team has only half of the action points and is surrounded by high-health enemies. However, AI in the game doesn’t have luck or stress. To compensate for this, AI has more health than our characters.
The mix – Depending on what you are looking for:
  • The encounter mechanics: You have a party of 4 fighters and can explore each map however you want. But you cannot split up your party to strategically place your soldiers to make each encounter easier. This means when you encounter a group of enemy soldiers, they will get into cover, leaving you in the open or places with limited cover. It makes each fight a bit more engaging and fits the game’s storyline better. You are “exploring” enemy territory and don’t know their whereabouts. But it kinda removed a part of the strategic element from each encounter. I basically choose the same strategy every time: use up all the action points during the first round and retreat to a chokepoint on the map, and the enemy will follow. Then, you will have all your action points and covers starting the next round. You can pick off whoever pops up from the edge of the fog of war.
  • The AI behavior: As mentioned, most enemies will follow you wherever you go. They will try to split up and use the pincer maneuver if the map allows. But most of the time, they just leave whatever covers they have and charge into the kill box I set. Each mission becomes repetitive really fast.
  • The storyline: The game has only two cutscenes, and all story development is delivered at the beginning of each mission. It still provided a complete story, even though it is short. This is perfect if you only want to enjoy the gameplay. But if you want to know more about the storyline, be warned!
The bad:
  • Loading: Loading saves sometimes takes longer than I expected. Not that this game requires you to constantly load previous saves. But it does take longer than the mission starts loading screen.
  • Hit chance : I guess this is quite common in all turn-based strategy games. It still drives me crazy every time I encounter it. Here is one more… And loading previous saves won’t affect the hit. I tested that, so now you know why the first point existed.

Overall, I enjoyed playing the game; it is a solid TBS game in the genre.
