Ok, so - I'm writing a new review because its been exactly a year since this game released and there has been a fair bit changed so I figured I should at least update it so it is reflective of the current state of the game.

My 2 biggest gripes at the moment are progression and monetization.

Monetization is one thing, one could say that locking all of the cosmetics with any visible effort put into them that isn't just a re-skin of a pre-existing armor behind obscene real money price tags is "just optional" and you aren't required to engage with it - but I find that to be a pretty annoyingly common sentiment that has built up around this sort of practice being so prominent in games. Arguably this isn't important but it still really sucks ass that it is SO overly prevalent in a game i paid 40 bucks for. The fact I can't look like anything other than a damn GIMP because I don't wanna pay 10 more dollars kinda sucks ass ngl.

Progression is a way bigger issue I have with the game, & something I think many others do aswell. The game seems to love having this system of locking the only viable gear for high level play locked behind an INCREDIBLY limited randomly rolled daily shop that you have to complete weekly challenges to even get the CHANCE to get gear you actually want. The game will ask you to kill XX amount of enemies or to loot a certain type of item - but these are a detriment more than a boon.

These types of challenges - and the fact that your personal gear progression on the game is almost ENTIRELY dependent on you actually finishing them - essentially turns what is intended to be a cooperative game into a bit of a headache and competition to see who can actually get their hands on the items needed to progress in whatever given challenge someone is trying to grind out. You need to get X amount of grimoires or tomes this week to get your challenge done? Your ass better hope nobody else picks them up before you or needs the challenge themselves, cause if they do you better bet won't get progress on your challenge. Why would the team oriented co-operative game want to do something silly like that?? The game actively encourages players to rat ahead of their team just to get to these items they need before others for the sake of progression- more often than not this just ends up causing the team to wipe due to separation..

There's a lot of good aspects I like about this, its been nice seeing the new maps that have been added since release that have added some much needed visual variety to the games level options. The gun-play is just stupid fun in the best sort of way and it doesn't get old shooting hot lasers or plasma into crowds of crazies charging at you. This game is basically childhood fulfillment for myself and many others wanting to be able to use the different types of weapons seen in this awesome universe in a more direct and satisfying way & they definitely nailed that aspect - which is the only reason I put up with a lot of the nonsense I have described here. But if you aren't a somewhat die-hard fan this is insanely hard to recommend to the average person.
