Do you like picross games that donโ€™t try to give you a headache but at the same time manage to offer you a challenge? If your answer is yes, then I would say that Gizmos: Steampunk Nonograms is a game right for you. With features designed to make it enjoyable for both experienced players and rookies alike, Gizmos: Steampunk Nonograms has a good number of puzzles that should keep one busy long enough (30h+) for the modest price of only $5. On top of that youโ€™ll get to solve a few extra jigsaw puzzles (those can be skipped by the way, if youโ€™re not a fan of the genre) and also take delight in the funny story set in a steampunk universe, which is delivered via fully-voiced, animated interludes.

The levels scale progressively from a 10x10 grid to a 30x30 grid, with the first level explaining very well how to solve a nonogram and acting like a step-by-step tutorial for new players. Solved blocks appear grayed out in the column / row number indicators, but only if itโ€™s clear which block represents that specific number (the game wonโ€™t spoil the solution to you) and when a row / column is fully solved, the remaining blank tiles will be automatically filled in. Tiles marked wrong will be immediately shown and replaced with the correct ones. However, this consumes one of the "lives" you have available for that level (the number of "lives" depends on the grid size). When all lives are depleted, the level ends (for example, for a 10x10 grid, you have 6 lives available which means that you can make a maximum of 6 mistakes).

Each of the levels can be logically solved (no guesses needed), and there are also up to 4 hints per level available, in case you get stuck. The hints charge progressively when marking tiles correctly. For those who like to spice things up a bit, you can try to meet the time limit in order to get a โ€œGoldโ€ Medal, competing with others in the leaderboard for that specific level. I am by no means a nonogram god (yet I am no newbie either), therefore those times seemed a bit unrealistic to me. For example a puzzle that I leisurely solve over 10-12 minutes has a 5 minutes time limit for Gold, therefore unless you attempt re-solving the level while having the solution already fresh in your mind (or freshly screenshotted), I donโ€™t really see how one could get a Gold medal on the first try. The Gold medal also implies that the other objectives are completed (donโ€™t use hints, donโ€™t make mistakes) but one of the many things I liked in Gizmos: Steampunk Nonograms is that they can be done in separate playthroughs of the same level.

I love picross-style games and Gizmos: Steampunk Nonograms is one of the most enjoyable Iโ€™ve played so far. It has a lot of content, pretty good price, and nice artwork. Itโ€™s not frustratingly challenging but at the same time, the levels are designed to unravel themselves slowly, tile by tile.

Paint it Back is great. :trophy:

I'm used to not knowing I made a mistake until it doesn't fit somewhere, at which point I tend to start over the puzzle or the section (Paint it Back splits big images into smaller chunks on easier difficulties). Staying with that game, the medium difficulty is just right for me. Easy is a bit too easy, hard is too hard for me on the 40x40 puzzles. (Workshop also kept me busy for a while.)

A hint button to point at mistakes would be nice.

No reset by the game, ever, I decide when I start over.

And yes, no timer, or an option to turn it off.

Your last line hits the basics, too. A few months ago my computer didn't want to boot, I got new parts, old windoze 7 didn't like new parts, couldn't get windoze 10 onto USB via tablet, but could get Linux onto USB, and liked it. I now run Linux Mint Mate. Steam Play works for a bunch of games so far, but not all perfect. Still better than Windoze 10. :winter2019happybulb:

@Mickmane: Thanks for the suggestion, I edited the review.

May I ask what would make a nonogram game worth buying for you?
Do you prefer not knowing that you made a mistake until the very end and figuring it all out by yourself?
And I assume: no timers that can stress you?
Linux support + window mode + sound/music sliders?

Oh, that should be in the review!

It's a definite 'don't buy' for me.

Then the level ends.
Basically for a 10x10 grid, you have "6 lives" and each mistake consumes one of these lives. When you run out of them, the level ends.

Lilly, and then what?

@Mickmane; you have a limited number of mistakes that scales with the grid size (for example for 10x10 it's 6 mistakes, for 20x20 it's 12, I think).

But if it undoes mistakes already, what's to keep you from just clicking every field?

Thank you all for checking this review!

@Mickmane: In regards to the error corrections, I think the way it's implemented now is really good. I wouldn't want to search for my mistake towards the end of a 900-tiles puzzle (30x30) and see that it was propagated through dozens of lines already. :astrosad:

While the genre itself isn't exactly my cup of tea, I do love your review style. It's very clean and easy on the eyes and I'm always happy to find another person who takes them as seriously as I do.

I'll now check out what else you have to offer ๐Ÿ™‚
