I like to roleplay as a benevolent emperor on a quest to enrich the galaxy by way of removing all that is not my empire

Its a deeper game then it shows on the surface. Probably the only strategy game I played as much or more then Civ4.
Things of note:
The difficulty of the game, because of particiularities of each race`s inherent AI and differences, changes with map size and turn speed, for me the most balanced setting is Large or Medium maps with around 5 players and normal or fast games. Pretty much all games can be won on those settings in Impossible difficulty.
There are several shortcuts for macromanaging your empire, there is lots of guides about it on steam community.
