It's a fairly simplistic space 4X. Sadly, it is buggy and unbalanced, and could have used couple more patches. It's also dead and thus not recommended.

Overall I still like it more than its sequel, there's a kind of simple elegance to its design, style and worldbuilding. More show-don't-tell, instead of going full ♥♥♥♥♥♥ like ES2 did.

I wanna like it more than I do. Maybe it's a steep learning curve, maybe it's something I'm just not getting, maybe it's the fact I was pitted against two aggressive opponents, but fending off a dozen ships per round with the one fleet I have that could feasibly fight that many just feels bad. Even after getting new tech to win the battles, that hardly matters. Either A) I'm swarmed and can't win fights or B) I'm winning fights, so they retreat repeatedly to waste my turns and swarm me more. I appreciate ship building and the tactics system conceptually, but god do the AI make it feel awful for actual gameplay.
