I've had this game on console, bought it again some time ago to enjoy on PC, especially because the hardware is better. This game is a masterpiece, criminally underrated (no pun intended) and deserves a lot more love.

Originally, this was supposed to be a third entry in the True Crime series, following Streets of LA and New York City. I believe it was originally dubbed as True Crime: Hong Kong. As Luxoflux went defunct sometime in 2010, the torch was passed over to Square Enix and United Front, who unfortunately, couldn't get the rights to the True Crime name. I believe that's largely why Sleeping Dogs went slightly under the radar - had it sold under the original name, it might have captured fans from the past who didn't know much about this game.

For those of you (and us) that have played the original True Crime games, Sleeping Dogs looks and feels like them both. It's incredibly fun to play, the combat is addictive and the story is great - straight up undercover cop in Hong Kong. That's another great thing too - this time it's not a generic location in the states - it's actually set in Hong Kong and the world around you is crafted beautifully.

All in all - you should definitely purchase.

After playing for 30 hours, I can safely say that you should buy this game. :D

There's certainly enough content here for a good amount of replayability. I've been looking for a dungeon crawler like this for ages, and it all comes together very well. I look forward to updates!

10 hrs on Steam but surely hundreds back in the day when it was on the web.

It's a damn shame. This game is just a cash cow now. You can probably say the same for other games such as TF2 which I'm happy to throw a few pennies at here and there, because the game works just fine without it.

This 'free' game has MTX at every corner and isn't really fun to play unless you're throwing money at it. Tight inventory space, limited functionality and the neckbeards who are happy to spend $100 or more, stand there belittling you at every chance they get.

Years ago I would have recommended it - now, though, I cannot possibly give it a thumbs up.

Do what they did with RuneScape and release a vanilla version prior to all this monetisation crap and I swear people will return.

After playing this game for 15 years, I can finally play it on Steam, a platform I've been using for almost 12 years.

The first part of your experience is getting to know the areas, learning the ropes, doing small quests and helping out the locals.

The second part of your experience is building up to Dragon Slayer. The grind can be tedious and at this point, you should definitely consider membership as everything just opens up for you.

The rest of your experience just gets progressively better. Long grinds can become exciting grinds, 60 Attack becomes 90 Attack, you experience bossing and PVM'ing, with the friends you made or the ones that tagged along with you.

I've completed every quest, my stats are base 80's and 90's, quite a few 99's, killed most bosses and there is still so much waiting for this account.

RuneScape/Gielinor will always be my true home.

The game that Bugbear always wanted to make.

Wreckfest is a game from the creators of the Flatout series. Flatout itself was a fun demolition derby destruction game and was a technical marvel for its time, in my opinion. Unfortunately, Bugbear were cut out of Flatout 3: Chaos and Destruction and that game, well, really really sucked - in fact, one of the lowest rated on Steam kind of sucked.

When I saw that Bugbear were creating a new demolition derby game, in the style of traditional "banger" racing, I was ecstatic. My father used to drive dirt track stock cars (and in between there were banger events) so this was not only a buzz for me, but also a nostalgic throwback to when my family and I used to watch my father compete over weekends and win trophies - one of which sits with me in my bedroom to this day.

CAREER MODE
How many car games do the following: you're a rookie chump who needs to compete in amateur racing to stand up to the big baddie champion, only to take their place at the end of the career mode - which, inevitably, has absolutely zero replayability? I remember playing Blur and getting pretty disappointed after you could fly through career mode in 3-6 hours flat. Wreckfest Career Mode is all about competing in local events to earn more cash-cash-money and XP, with some extra unlocks along the way. I love it because it's just straight up demolition challenges that earn you extra rewards if you manage to beat them. Just when you think it's about to get repetitive, they throw a different challenge at you on a different location.

CUSTOM EVENTS
This is probably where I spend the most time. I love playing around with the settings here, and trying different cars for each. The map selection is pretty much spot on - you have loops, simple derby's with jumps, ramps, holes and obstacles in your path, whether it's a pile of tyres being thrown 50ft in the air or banners and podiums being crashed into and destroyed. Car selection, whilst can be limited in certain game modes, is fulfilling and every car feels useful in most situations. My favourite is definitely Starbeast because of its medium-level toughness and nice speed/acceleration, whilst accounting for cornering. Rocket is another favourite as it's your starting car, so you're probably going to put the most effort into making it better for those lower tier races.

GRAPHICS, SOUND, DAMAGE & PHYSICS
The graphics & damage in this game is beautiful and the physics feel real, heavy and your health isn't necessarily damage based. One thing I always hated in most other car games is how they handle damage and how much health it takes away from the player, even if you're not at fault. Let's say in another car game, you crash into someone and you both lose 20 health. In this game, so long as you're the one attacking, damage to you is minimal and I love this kind of play because it encourages you to get dirty and creative, rather than hanging around the outside of the derby waiting patiently to finish before you are destroyed. Bugbear obviously had this in mind and do a great job of encouraging you, the player, to go looking for targets without losing 10-20 health just by trying to play the objective.

I love the track Dirt Devils as it has some insane jumps and obstacles and each time I play, everybody gets together in a large pack and absolutely destroys one another - tyres and concrete go flying, car parts are laid strewn and tyre skids are all over the place.

The handling of the cars is phenomenal and once again feels very heavy, like a real banger should. I've seen some people complaining about the handling, saying it's too rugged or icy - this is exactly what bangers are like. You're not pulling 100mph round a corner, you're going to drift, lose speed and probably crash into something or someone. It's probably not everyone's cup of tea but I find it to be one of the most immersive parts of this game.

The sound design for this game is also spot on. The way the cars gurgle give it a rugged nasty feeling that only belongs in this kind of game and the sound team at Bugbear obviously spent a lot of time in this department. Every crash, bump and wheel-spin sounds incredibly euphoric.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Another thing that I love in every mode here is that your opponents aren't anything special. Other car games, no matter how many times you restart, there's probably 2-3 NPC's with the same name that just happen to win or at least pop in the top 3 without fail every single time. Bugbear treats NPC's in this game like they are any other player. That means that they react to you, chase you down and even flee when you start to hammer down on them. Their names are also laid out like they are real players, which is a neat thing which I never appreciated before. I got tired of seeing 'J. Smith' or 'L. Harris' in the leaderboards (names for NPC's, usually named after devs) and here, it feels very immersive because of how well the AI can play. In career mode and even custom events, cars with B or A class are going to outrun you most of the time, but if you chase them down, they're going straight to the back.

CARS, CUSTOMISATION & MAPS
The car selection in this game is awesome, even without the DLC included. As previously mentioned, each car feels very useful and can also depend on what kind of track you're on. In career mode, some cars are exempt from certain events which is understandable, but the most fun to be had here is once again in Custom Events where you can make every car random, or you can make everyone drive vans, limos, and all sorts of beasts.

Each car can (for the most part, as some DLC 'mini-cars' cannot) be customised. Whilst I do wish for some deeper, more creative freedom when it comes to customisation, I have to say I do still thoroughly enjoy it. Crash 'n' Burn for PS2 and Xbox had, hands down, the best car customisation in racing games, in which every part is pretty much paintable or changeable in its own right, with a flurry of decals, parts and paint jobs. I do wish Bugbear would make this aspect of Wreckfest more open and free, but still even as it is, it is still fun to mess around with your cars and unlock new parts.

Map selection is pretty much spot on, like I said before. You've got a vast palette of tracks and vibrant colours all with different challenges, be it loops, cities, mountains or dirt tracks. I do wish for more track obstacles and particles, however, given the destructive nature of the game and some races go without a single destructive crashpile.

I don't play a lot of the multiplayer, but it's incredibly fun with friends on voice chat and the community are pretty nice - so I'll give it that. :D

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, this game is Bugbears best work to date. It can be a little rough for newcomers and the menus might also be a little confusing at times, but this is hands down one of the best banger racing games currently on the market, which gets constant updates and events from the developers, the king of destruction derby games, Bugbear. You don't need the DLC for this to be a complete experience, but I would highly advise getting it. The gameplay has variety, you learn how to approach different enemies and tracks, and you'll get a kick out of customising your cars to your hearts content. Most of all, you will appreciate the work that has gone into the physics and graphics here too.

Also mod support - need I say more?

All in all, I recommend!

My friends and I picked up this game because we were looking for two things:

1) A game to meme on.
2) Something refreshing.

Turns out, after an hour of playing, we did not get the former but we certainly did get the latter. We've racked up almost 20 hours each because of how interesting this game is. We spent the better part of 15 hours floating around, turning our raft into a massive stratofortress - of which we all had roles. I was in charge of the cooking and boat construction (I accidentally made our boat look like a massive floating dong - it didn't look too bad until I built a tower and looked down on it... not even sure how the vision I previously had turned into this). Another friend was in charge of crafting things for the boat and my other friend was doing a little bit of everything.

After all that time, we started to look up things online because we didn't know if this was just IT, or if there was some kind of end goal (to stop us from getting bored). After some reading, we realised we had to make an antenna, battery and receiver. We put in lots of effort to build a comms tower for our boat and then we realised, damn, we need THREE antennas - so back to the grind we go. Because of our communication, we managed to do it pretty quickly and we ended up finding a transmission tower which was great to loot. After getting there and reading some of the notes left behind, we realised our journey was far from over.

We stumbled across this yacht, which was home to some really messed up creatures. I won't go into detail, but the game has thrown some proper curveballs at us and has brought us back every day to play more.

Honestly, it might be fun solo but as I've only played with friends, it's definitely a co-op game. 1 other friend is all you'll need but another friend getting a trio going is so much more fun as things get done quicker. The game itself is graphically pleasing, the crafting system is a little confusing at first (with the research table and all) but once you get used to it, it'll just come to you like it did for us.

I say give it a try!

(I'm not sure why Steam has only clocked 0.9 hours, so please ignore that.)

My buddy bought me this game a little while ago and I have to say I'm glad he did.

It's really good fun with friends. I'm a massive space-sim buff, so this game is really up my street. It's far better than something like Rodina or Astroneer, but it does fall a bit short when compared to something like No Man's Sky. This game is a little easy to learn, but hard to master and you'll probably forget what half of the controls and actions are once you're past the first level or two in the first segment.

Rodina/Astroneer give you very little to do whilst this game gives you lots to do but most of it is lost depending on what your attention span is like - for me, it's a little difficult as I have ADHD so a lot of the functions are generally lost after less than half an hour. However, it's a really fun game to play with friends, the jet pack in this game is so much fun to use and can create lots of laughs with your buddies when you bumble around from planet to planet.

Definitely recommended and a thumbs up from me - it might be your thing, it might not be but if you're not into No Man's Sky and want something a little similar but more complex, then this is certainly for you. :-)
