This is what an RPG game should look like. Minimalistic user interface, no minimap with GPS, no quest marks on the map. The game doesn't hold the player's hand to complete both the main and side quests. Personal diary is more than a sufficient help. You need to explore the map and talk to people to find out what to do. Gothic 2 perfected this system by giving the player various options to complete some quests. In Gothic 1, it's unfortunately not so common yet.

Even though there are a few immortal characters and some gates can't be opened until it's time to go there, in general, the game doesn't stop you from doing anything you want even if it's not the right time. There are no invisible walls or other obstacles that prevent you from going somewhere you're yet not supposed to.

There something interesting almost behind every corner. The world isn't too big, vast and empty as it's normal in a lot of famous RPGs. It's an ideal size in my opinion. The people make the game world feel alive as each character has a unique personality and even the unnamed NPCs have their daily regime.

Gothic was way ahead of its time in a lot of ways and it's still better than a lot of modern AAA RPG. It'll be forever my most favorite game of all time.
