RESIDENT EVIL 4

This is one of those games from your childhood that translates perfectly into modern day and really holds up just amazingly. The main thing that makes this game so good is that it prioritises fun fast-paced over-the-top action and survival horror above anything else. The whole game feels like a cut to the chase. In the opening, you are taught how to walk forwards, shoot and reload. You are then thrown into a small village with about 30 enemies and a boss that will cut your head off instantly if it catches you. It doesn't slow down after that. The story is cohesive and easy to follow with short and genuinely entertaining cutscenes backed up by good voice acting and a nice deal of cheesy, campy humor. The combat is unique and satisfying and the bosses are cool and exciting to boot. In terms of enemies you'll mostly be fighting against humanoids but their AI is very good for a 2005 game and I still get outsmarted by them regularly, especially on the hardest difficulty where they pursue you brutally. Exploration is great and there's plenty of detours you can take across 3 maps to find loot or some of the game's many amazingly designed guns. The one complaint everyone gives it is that it is cut down from the previous survival horror games - that's partially true and the marketing campaign even said this, but the mechanics are still there. No health regen, limited ammo, limited carry capacity (through a very fun little minigame) and a focus on when to fight and when to avoid during combat. It's just one of those games where everything works as you'd expect and nothing frustrating gets in the way. Resident Evil 4 is my favourite game ever. Hopefully the remake holds up.
