Definitely one of the best experiences I've had in a story-driven game.

First off, rarely have I seen a game whose settings bring the story to life as much as A Plague Tale. The world, even in its tragic, apocalyptic state, finds ways to look stunning, beautiful, and real. The cinematic scenes, interactions, the atmosphere, events, and the people are very much alive. They all seamlessly work to elevate the story to a new level. Can we just talk about the number of times where I spam clicked the screenshot button during a cutscene or stopped to play with the camera feature in-game at the sight of something spectacular? Even without the screenshots, I still vividly recall the various places within the game.

The character development is big. Even though we do not meet a ton of characters, the few companions that Amicia and Hugo make along the way feel like family. While I wouldn't consider myself an extremely sentimental person, I do often sympathize with the cast and rooting for their growth in the many ways that they happen. Unfortunately, you do not control which companions join you on chapters and quests as the game is purely story-driven. However, there is enough bonding time for them all.

The gameplay is rather simple and consists mostly of stealth and using items. Amicia's primary weapon is a slingshot which she finds creative ways to use. One shouldn't expect crazy and in-depth combat as it is somewhat out of character for the girl and her little brother trying to survive (and not to kill everyone). What makes the gameplay interesting is the multitude of ways that you can approach a scenario or event. There are many items in your arsenal that can be crafted at your choice; its about how you use them. There is no fixed way of doing something unless otherwise told. The boss fights have mechanisms that are not too difficult to understand - typically if something doesnt click right away, observe the surroundings for clues.

All and all, I personally found the game to be fun, enjoyable and a thrilling experience. It was like being apart of a movie with twists and turns. I was pleasantly surprised at the incredible execution of scenes and character/world building. I would definitely re-live the story again someday. Excited to try the sequel when it goes on sale :)
