I tried to get into this game years ago, but was frustrated by the difficulty even on the first campaign mission. After a quick read of some community guide material and some youtube videos, I found it much easier to get started. It seems my difficulty was not with the tactics but just getting familiar with the interface and particulars how how to command the units, so that was refreshing. For example, you don't want to tell an engaged unit to move backwards by clicking behind them because they turn around and get slaughtered, you should have them fall back first.
I don't of any other games that really accomplish this level of simulation of Napoleonic battlefield tactics. There is much fun to be had building a huge army and changing the outcome of historic battles, I suppose as long as you don't think about the tens of thousands of simulation lives being lost! Very satisfying game.
