Circle of the Moon

Overview

Circle of the Moon gets a bad rap in the Castlevania community, I don’t think this is warranted in the least. COTM is easily one of my favorite’s in the franchise. It may appear simpler than its contemporaries but it just gives it a more classic Castlevania feel with a lighter RPG side. It looks visually great and has high difficulty.

Graphics/Artstyle

The graphics in COTM are a contentious point with this game, I understand why some people might not be fond of them as they are behind its immediate predecessor and its successors. However, viewed as an evolution or merging of the NES/SNES Castlevania art style, I think they look absolutely beautiful.

Character design is also on point, all the enemies look fantastic.

Music

So musically COTM’s soundtrack is mostly remixes of older Castlevania soundtracks, I do not care at all; I’m reviewing it as is, in a vacuum.

The soundtrack for this game ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SLAPS, it is easily my favourite castlevania soundtrack several of the tracks are forever engraved into my skullsponge and I hear the on repeat all the time. Some standouts to me are “A Vision of Dark Secrets”, “Awake”, Clockwork”, and “Dance of Illusions”. Though literally every track in the game hits, they did a phenomenal job with it.

Controls

COTM has really tight feeling controls, everything feels completely grounded and fast and advanced movements and techniques are completely fluid. I have no idea what people are talking about when they say they don’t like them, I just don’t get it.

Story

The story of COTM is rather simple and unimportant to the greater lore of Castlevania (as it’s a Gaiden title) but that’s okay, I enjoyed it and liked the characters and plot that exists in the game.

Gameplay

So COTM is rather difficult, I’ve seen it ranked in the top 5 Castlevania’s in difficulty on forums more than once. And yeah, it shows. COTM will kick your ass, enemies will ♥♥♥♥ you if you don’t figure out there patterns and almost every single boss will take a few tries at least.

I think the most notable Boss would have to be the Twin Zombie Dragons. It's rather infamous and could easily crush an inexperienced casual player’s run. And for a while I felt that it was completely unfair; even after defeating it in previous playthroughs I still held this opinion, however this was the playthrough where I figured it out, there is a strategy involving dodging under the dragons strategically and learning the timing on their attacks. This turns the fight into both one of my favorite and most hated bosses in the franchise. It'll still kick your ass when you know what you're doing but now it doesn’t feel like a slaughter, it’s a battle. (this doesn’t count DSS cheese)

COTM also has an enemy variety issue, late game enemies are often reskins of early game ones.

DSS Cards

The DSS cards were a good idea, they’re easy to understand and can be fun as hell to use; The problem comes when you get to the way they’re acquired, grinding. Oh my god how I hate grinding, the drop rates on some of these stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cards are so low that you could unironically spend an hour killing the same enemy with bad luck.

Harmony of Dissonance

Overview

I really wanted to like this game but I struggled with it hard. It’s visually gorgeous as they wanted it to look more like a PSX title than a SNES one and the gameplay can be fun but the music is absolutely atrocious and it has the least challenging gameplay I’ve ever seen in a Castlevania title so far.

Music

To start with, the music. It’s horrible, I had to mute the game's audio within an hour of starting. It’s like all the funding got put into the visuals and then they had the intern do the soundtrack in an afternoon. I have nothing else to say.

Graphics/Artstyle

This is HOD’s strongest trait. It is an incredible graphical feat for the GBA and holds up flawlessly. I love the look of every area in the game and some of the graphical effects they pulled off are awesome.

However I have one big issue that’s staring you in the face for the entire game, The main character has a permanent non-removable highlight around him that is entirely visually grating. It actually looks like someone scribbled on the screen with a crayola magic marker and I hate everything about it.

Story

Story in HOD is actually pretty decent. They have an intriguing plot line related to the fact that Dracula was never supposed to resurrect at this time and some other mysteries that I won't spoil. All in all I’m a big fan of it.

Controls/Gameplay/Magic

So the controls in Harmony of Dissonance are a little bit more loose and floaty this time around, I’m not sure what it is but it’s almost like there’s low gravity at times, though it’s not too bad. There are also additions like sliding in either direction instead of just backwards that I wish were in every title and it can make combat feel really good.

However Combat itself feels completely pointless, I died 2 times in the entire game, 2 ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ TIMES. I didn’t even know what I was doing and I still ended up annihilating every single boss and enemy in the entire game because for some reason, in there course correction from COTM’s DSS cards they overcorrected so hard that magic became the single most overpowered thing in the entire game. It’s a really cool implementation and I like it, I just wish that it was nerfed into oblivion. The absence of any sort of challenge makes this game into an absolute chore.

Aria of Sorrow

Overview

AOS is easily the best of the GBA trilogy, It has the perfect blend of the challenge and controls from COTM with the visuals and graphics of HOD, and on top of that it has one of the more interesting stories in the Castlevania franchise (in my opinion)

Music

They did a fantastic job on the soundtrack this time around, almost every single song in the game is fantastic with a couple that are just ok, none of the tracks are remotely close to the crap fire that is HOD’s soundtrack though.

They nailed the controls in AOS, everything feels completely responsive and smooth. Soma also has a good feeling of gravity to him unlike in HOD, however they removed the left/right dodging and went back to the SOTN system which is a shame, I really enjoyed being able to dodge instantly in any direction in HOD.

The gameplay is a lot of fun as well, they returned to the weapon selection system from SOTN and found a balance to make magic fun to use while not annihilating the game’s difficulty. However once again the way you get spells is though grinding, luckily It doesn’t seem nearly as necessary in this game as no bosses really need spells to be defeated; except for 3 specific souls you need to get the true ending, I am not a fan of this but it’s better than the DSS cards.

I had some notes about bosses/enemies and whatnot but I’m gonna hit the steam review character limit so whatever.

Story

Wow they really hit the ball out of the park here. The game is set in the modern day and we get a whole load of lore and information, I don’t really want to discuss much about the story as to not spoil things however. (expect a returning fan favorite character though))

Graphics/Artstyle

Seemingly using HOD as a graphics base AOS looks just as incredible as ever, I really don’t have much to say that I didn’t for HOD but notably they removed the stupid ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crayola outline from the main character and it improves the visual experience a lot for me.

FINAL FANTASY X/X-2 HD Remaster

X-1; Rough Around The Edges

While playing through Final Fantasy X I couldn't help but constantly be pulled into the story only to be drawn out of it by a multitude of things, I'd say primarily it was the voice acting and character animation. At the best of times the voice acting can be passable, and at the worst it feels like they pressed a loaded revolver to the back of the head of their voice actors, gave them a no-context script and yelled READ.
The animation doesn't ever hit the same lows but it doesn't hit the same highs either, It is more on track with prior titles like VIII and IX. (of course I'm not talking about the pre-rendered movies those are pretty consistently phenomenal.)

Now about the story; I really loved this one, It's incredibly heartbreaking and tragic but that doesn't mean bad, It's just emotional. Going through the game once you learn more about the truth (The Fayth's dream, Tidus, etc.) and Tidus and Yuna develop their relationship, it becomes this incredibly painful and existential journey where the one thing you want them to do is just go home, but of course they can't. I shed many a tear at the ending but the amount of hope that Eternal Calm brought me was almost palpable, good job square you glorious bastards.

And one more glaring issue/plot hole with the game's story. the whole big bad Sin being an unstoppable force and all that ♥♥♥♥, is hilarious as not only is the fight against him really easy but you encounter several fights with people in the game (that are Yevonites) who do limit damage consistently and could EASILY curb stomp sin, so my issue here is; why is sin a threat to anyone exactly? why aren't these godlike characters just stationed at major population centres and when Sin shows up they just blast his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ arms off till he runs away...? they make the crusaders look like a joke.

Now the gameplay I am very middling on, there are times where I felt this was my favourite combat in the franchise; the return to true turn based gameplay, the inclusion of the character turns being visible, and the simplification of the elements system.
But at other times I found this to be my LEAST favourite combat in the franchise; The bosses while until the end weren't particularly difficult, felt like they were ALL just puzzles and not fights, I found my self cursing a lot of the time that this games combat was just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ Persona rip off. It felt like they try to do what Persona does where there is a single reliable way to beat the bosses and you need to work out the strategy but in reality it is ALWAYS just "equip armour that makes you immune to their status effects and cast protect/shell on your party", This got really tiring really quickly. (or of course you could spend 20 hours grinding and doing all the side content like celestial weapons but i outright refuse to do that ♥♥♥♥)
I also don't like the way weapons/armour is handled and I'm completely neutral on the leveling system, It has negatives and positives.

God I am actually very conflicted by this title, the story is to die for but the gameplay makes me angry and the jankiness pulls you out of it all; yet I'm still recommending it, take that as you will.

X-2; One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

So I've written some key things I want to talk about in my notes but my brain is kinda melted by X-2 so I'm expecting this review to be more ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and rambly then usual.

Originally I was going to title the review for X-2 The Paradigm Shift, This was before the games story became an unbearable slog that lost my interest so heavily that I needed a full 24 hour break from the game just to complete it. As far as i'm concerned this entire game exists just to justify a happy ending for FFX.
while in the beginning I actually considered the characters and writing to be okay, (I'm talking the first few hours here) this was when I actually though it was going somewhere.
Now I want to stress that I don't give a remote ♥♥♥♥ about the shift the game took with the general vibe and style, I honestly was kind of digging the whole thing; I am solely talking about the story proper. it's just boring as ♥♥♥♥.

I actually felt like I was playing the entire game to see a few cut-scenes. And the thing is, I loved those cut scenes, when the game actually gets on track and continues the story that people give a ♥♥♥♥ about they do it well, and I AM happy with the ending. though I need to note that it's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ they went with a multiple endings thing and hid the good ones behind some unexpected button press ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ at key moments.

So I also HATED the main antagonist of this game, and not because of anything he does, but because he's simply the worst written antagonist in the Final Fantasy franchise (I haven't beaten all the games this is just out of the ones I've played).
Shuyin's story is literally just "some angry dude from a thousand years ago who wants to destroy the world because he's angry", at no point in the story did I give a remote ♥♥♥♥ about what was happening involving him.

Now It seemed there were also some plot hole things going on such as how their are Aeons showing up, why the Fayth is still alive, why Shuyin looks so much like Tidus (like is this just some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ coincidence?) and uses all his attacks and abilities. I think (apart from the Shuyin thing) that I'm supposed to accept that this is all just happening from the Farplane...? But I was under the impression that the Farplane was finality, that once you were in the Farplane you couldn't just pull a FFII and come back because you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ want to. hell maybe i just missed out on a boatload of lore because I couldn't stand to do side content. Also I say this knowing about the people not dying in FFX-1 they were not sent and therefor never reached the farplane, that isn't the case here.

Now on the gameplay side of things I actually shockingly found myself LOVING everything about it, this was the one step forward part of the game. I found it is among my favourite ATB systems in the franchise but that it is dragged down incredibly far by the dull narrative. I loved both the dressphere system, the gridsphere system, and the ways they worked together in combat. I also thought the special dressphere's were a really cool and unique concept that acted as a phenomenal "limit break".

Okay so lastly; The Last Mission, I was intending to play this. Then I looked into it online and fell into the horrible rabbit hole of the audio drama, novel, and the botched release of The Last Mission failing to include the scene that makes it a sequel to the 100% ending.
As far as i'm concerned NONE of this is canon; ♥♥♥♥ everything after x-2, none of it counts. It's all awful fan fiction and ♥♥♥♥.

SO THAT'S IT, I'M DONE WITH FFX AND FFX-2; NEVER AGAIN!!!

Added [9/8/21] [Spoilers for FFXV]

In my previous Final Fantasy reviews for VIII and IX I stated that I wished for more post game media like Advent Children for VII; If X/X-2 is an example of what that post game media looks like I take it back, This actually really REALLY makes me appreciate Luna and Noctis being deceased at the end of XV as it means square can't retroactively ruin the characters and story. Please, if you aren't aware of what post X story content I'm talking about DO. NOT. LOOK. INTO. IT.
Well unless you want to have a bad ending to the X series.
