Every level appears hand-drawn, with gritty texture (and I don't mean that in the 3D rendering way) that makes the world stand out as a tarnished and dirty place. Despite not having any lines, the game is quite good at articulating not just what characters are talking about, but how they're saying it. Even the backstory, doled out piece by piece, is touching.
