Summary

So after 50 hours of playtime, I can finally write a review on Fallout: New Vegas GOTY. I have enjoyed this game so much and so many improvements from Fallout 3. At the same time, some things have stayed the same.
If you like or love Fallout 3, then you'll love this.
The game starts not as a vault dweller but as a "Courier" that was shot and left for dead by a mysterious person in this fictional version of Las Vegas. The game then revolves and progresses with the quest in trying to find the culprit and what was stolen from the courier.
This review will only highlight new things they added in the game, particularly gameplay mechanics. There's not much new stuff here in regards to graphics and animation. I will do my best to keep this spoiler free. With that, let's start!

The Good
Best things about the game
  • Aiming - One of the very first things I've noticed is the addition of Iron Sights. Made combat much better than Fallout 3's gun combat
  • Factions - There is a ton of faction to join, and fight. They're a lot of factions added here. Some are from the DLCs. So there's definitely a lot of things to do here.
  • Ammo Crafting - I don't remember if there is an ammo crafting mechanic in Fallout 3 but my memory is telling there isn't. So yeah, you can craft ammunition now. You can either buy parts from Merchants or breakdown ammo that you collected and use it to create an ammo for another gun. There is also surplus ammo boxes which gives you a ton of ammo but can deplete your weapon's durability much faster.
  • Companion Perks - You can now get special perks from bringing different companions in the Mojave. Adds a little more depth in terms of gameplay and character to the companions as perks would be related to their back stories which is a great thing.
  • Weapon Mod - There are now weapon mods in the game which are sold by Merchants. Mods costs a ton of caps so these are mostly for endgame content and builds.
  • Character Implants - These are basically character enhancements. Which, surprise surprise, adds buffs to the Courier. Implants are very expensive and meant for the endgame.
  • Story - The story is engaging. Kept me interested for hours and there's so many to choose from. Some companions will even have dialogues whenever you go to an area or do a quest. So the world and the story feels very alive.
  • Perks - So many new perks here that are powerful and interesting especially perks that are related to speech or charisma. Some perks like Terrifying Presence
  • Choices - You can make a Good or Evil character and the game allows you to. You can also stick to one faction and still be able to do quests for them until the endgame where it reminds you that will be irreversible. This is before the Hoover Dam Battle.
  • Survival Mode - The game adds a Survival or Hardcore Mode where you need to monitor thirst, hunger, rad level, and sleep. Stimpaks heal over time instead of instantly. Crippled Limbs gets worse over time if left unhealed. For more information about Hardcore mode, refer to this link: https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Hardcore_mode
  • Companion Wheel - Makes it easier to issue commands without having to scroll down for the option in a conversation menu.
  • New Enemies(and Variants) - A lot of new mutated abominations here and some high level variants of Human enemies like NCR and Legion. They occasionally send assassins to kill you when have very low reputation or you are "vilified" by the faction.
  • DLCs - Lots of content here and some are very fun. Keep in mind that I still haven't played through every single questline DLC but the one that I did play (Old World Blues) is VERY FUN. So many hilarious moment in Old World Blues and a very remarkable experience.
  • World - I feel like the world in New Vegas is much bigger. There's still a lot of areas I haven't cleared out. So there's a lot to see here.
  • Reputation - The game is making use of a reputation system to tell you how a certain town/faction feel towards you. This can affect their aggression and also gives you some discount when bartering.
The Bad
Worst things about the game
  • Level Cap - This is what I hated the most. For a game with almost endless replay-ability, the level cap is VERY LOW. Especially if you don't have all of the DLCs. The default or basic level cap is Level 30 if you only have the base game. Each DLCs raises the level cap by 5 which gives you Level 50 if you have every single DLC. So yeah. You better have a concrete build before you hit that level cap.
  • No Remarkable Changes to Graphics or Animation - The game is still using the same animation set and graphics from Fallout 3. You'll have to get used to the same slow "running" speed. Soooo yeeeah.
The Ugly
Things that they need to improve on; but not exactly a deal breaker
  • No Open Ending - I can almost add this on The Bad but this particular game design decision is up to debate whether the game would benefit from an open ending(like how Broken Steel DLC adds an open ending in Fallout 3). Personally, I hate this. I would love to have an open ending Fallout New Vegas. But I guess Obsidian didn't think it'll be a good idea.
  • Finding Companions - Maybe this is only me but I found it a bit difficult to find companions here that I only ended up with Boone. Some of them doesn't hint on you that they wanna tag along or telling you "Hey I can be a companion!". So yeah. You'll be needing to dig into the conversation options so you can tell if someone is a companion.
  • Bugs - What would a Fallout game be without the bugs. To be fair, there's very little weird glitches here but I've encountered many game crashing bugs. Mostly when fast traveling from point to point. So take this with a grain of salt as it may be unique to my game. May not reflect your experience. The game is particularly stable.

Final Verdict
A gem. A must play! The storyline, mechanics and basically a better version of Fallout 3, you'll never go wrong with this game. It's 2020 and the storyline will still keep you busy and give you a wonderful time. Though, don't expect anything special with graphics and animation.
