Early Access Review
There is one fun thing about this game - combining effects to make cool spells. The system is similar to Noita's spell system.

However, the game has too many issues to be fun as a whole.
  • Nearer to the end of the game, your spells will cause major performance issues, even if they aren't that crazy.
  • The music of the game is jarring, it isn't a seamless loop and you can tell when it starts again.
  • There are some pretty obvious bugs. For example, if you have 1 HP left and then unequip a maximum HP upgrade, you are put to 0 HP but still remain alive.
  • Enemies and the player just slide around the place without animations. Just because your graphics are simple, you can't just call it "a charming retro aesthetic" to excuse a lack of effort being put into the aesthetic. The enemies have simple, uncoloured sprites to begin with, and would be easily animated if effort was put in.
  • Updates are infrequent, despite the simplicity of the game. It feels like the 'early access' label was put on this game to excuse its issues.

It isn't worth paying for in its current state.

the game is fun for about 15 minutes, and then it gets very repetitive.

you barely start with any upgrades unlocked, most of them being plain boring stat increases, so the first bunch of times you play feel exactly the same. the game makes it difficult to max a single upgrade, which is needed to unlock new upgrades, which would be fine if more upgrades were unlocked to begin with to make the time unlocking new upgrades fun. i've also found that sometimes even if you max an upgrade it doesn't unlock what it says it should, unless i misunderstood the missions (HP boost max did not unlock vampirism).

for some reason there is a magnet upgrade in the shop which increases your ship's XP collection range, yet you already start with infinite XP collection range, so the upgrade seems pointless.

Early Access Review
fun game,
needs some polish (well its early access so i think that goes without saying) but 1000% percent worth playing even in its current state,
if you love roguelites like me then buy it
developers are very active and communicate with the players a lot too which is always a huge plus

Every time I 'beat the game' it felt like they gave me another game for free. also its a roguelite so i automatically like it, plus the way the devs made the game get easier in creative ways over time to help people who are struggling is kinda cool. no i wasnt struggling stop dont look at me with those eyes

I really love the combat in this game. The battles feel so alive, and so much is going on around you (in a good way). It feels like a scene out of star wars. Just for that, I recommend it.

I have never experienced latency issues while playing. The bugs I have encountered are minor considering it is an early access game.

However, there a few reasons why you may not want to purchase this game (From biggest reason to smallest).
  1. The price. It is way too expensive for what it currently is.
  2. The player count. I rarely see servers go above 30-40% of their capacity. This will likely decrease quickly as people get bored of the game, unless the game reduces its price or gets major updates. Seeing as how it has taken.. many years for the game to reach this point, I feel doubtful that updates will be regular. I may be wrong though, I don't know much about the background of this game.
  3. The only thing to do, is fight (at least it seems so). If space battles aren't your thing, then you probably won't enjoy the game.
  4. There is no tutorial. It is.. very confusing for the first couple of hours if you have (like me) never played a space sim like this. The controls are confusing (especially when you find out capital ships have different controls to the smaller ships) for the first time, and the UI is confusing and very cluttered. People in chat are quite helpful though, and a couple of videos have come out explaining some of the basic mechanics of the game. There is a tutorial button however! It just doesn't work. At least it means they are planning to add one eventually.

TL;DR: It is a fun, but expensive space battle sim game.

P.S: I am really hoping for VR support. This game.. would be amazing in VR, I think.

I bought this game because I remember playing Swords & Souls a few years ago on kongregate and I really enjoyed it.

The training is fun and scales in difficulty well. If there is a type of training you don't like doing (for me it is dodging, I suck at it) you can put all of your stat points in it to avoid training it.

The battles are okay, I wouldn't call them fun though. This may be because I haven't played much of the game yet and it hasn't gotten very complex. However, I have never found turn-based combat fun, so I am likely biased.

There are a lot more mechanics that add fun to the game than the original Swords & Souls, like pet taming, fishing, hiring help and a skill tree to name a few.

The characters are fun to talk to. I like the art style. I don't really like the music but it fits well with the game.

My main issue with the game that it seems to crash very often right now, I've played it for ~3 hours as of writing this review and my game has crashed 4 times, but I only lost progress once and it wasn't that much of a hassle. The game was just recently released though, so I assume this will be fixed soon.

I realise that my review seems more negative than positive when read, but it is an enjoyable game and I would recommend it to others.

Early Access Review
Bare in mind that at the time of writing this review, I've only played enough of the game to beat the cook, the review may be edited later if I discover things about the game I have missed.

A fun game that I like to play every so often when I am bored. It is a little repetitive so I wouldn't play it for an extended period of time. The most satisfying thing about the game I've found it unlocking new items and spells for the characters and the upgrade system.

Some of the minor things I dislike about the game:
- Sometimes dodging is impossible if projectiles go straight down your route of travel because of the character being restricted to walk down the road without being able to dodge to the side. This can be solved by the player if they lure the ranged enemies to a crossroads where you can dodge, though this takes quite a long time as the enemies are quite slow. It can also be countered using items like the shield which gives a chance for the projectiles to be blocked. As there are counters such as these, it only makes it a minor annoyance, though personally I'd like it if there was a bit of room to be able to move left and right to the edges of the road you're on.

- Sometimes you enter the dungeon and meet a crowd of enemies swarming you at the spawnpoint. This happened to me near the beginning of the game and I didn't have the spells or items to be able to deal with it at the time. Honestly though, I can only see this being a problem in the roguelike mode, so again it isn't a big problem in my eyes.
