As for the game's content, plenty to do, but the open world stuff got old for me around Gongaga. Coincidentally, that's also when the whispers return and the story takes a serious nose dive.

Don't buy it for the story if you're a fan of the original. And I recommend using mods to make the still annoying combat system bearable. The majority of people probably suffered through the last string of fights because of how unbearably bad both the combat and the story got.
