Since this is one of my most-played games ever, I suppose it is only fair I finally give it a short recommendation: this may not seem like the newest of games anymore, but the developer SCS sure keeps on developing it! New map expansions keep coming, as do frequent free upgrades to the base game (almost too frequent, if you ask the large and very active modding community, which is another selling point). It is perhaps not a full simulator in the sense of e.g. some flight simulators, but neither is it merely an arcade game. It simulates truck driving in a reasonable, pleasant way, and has some game aspects such as economy, skill progression and unlocks to keep the new player hungry for more and more. The oldest parts of the map (the UK and parts of central and eastern Europe) are... well, old, very old, in comparison with the newer map expansions and the sibling game ATS, and it does show, but in line with its continuing commitment, SCS has started to upgrade these older areas for free as well. If you haven't played it, do get it, at the very least on sale (and remember to give the newer areas like Italy and the Baltics a chance)! You might be surprised.

Update 2020: This game, along with American Truck Simulator, is a labour of love. It's been out for many years, but we're still eagerly waiting for great new content, which keeps coming. And the modding scene is still excellent.
