Solid tactical gameplay, pretty decent procedural mission system with a few semi-procedural missions sprinkled in. The campaign is solid but unimaginative. There's no real twists or unexpected events, it's decent, but you'll occasionally wince at the voice acting. Music is amazing. Definitely worth the entry price. Career Mode adds to replayability, since the campaign doesn't have any big secrets to uncover on replays.

For DLC: Flashpoint adds a lot of hand crafted story arcs that the game sorely needs to fill out the gap between the procedural stuff and the campaign. Urban Combat adds urban maps which are a pretty big change from the standard outdoor stuff and make jumping mechs a lot more valuable. Heavy Metal is straight broken. The crazy equipment and special ability mechs therein pretty much break the game, but hey, finding broken combos is some people's bag. I think picking up the season pass or bundle of all of them on sale is worthwhile, but I'm not sure if combined all of them are worth more than the base game.
