So far, it's everything I expected. It's Civ5 but wait, here's the catch… it's in space.

Barbarians are now aliens, city-states are now stations, money is now "energy" and culture is now "virtue". This blatant renaming and reuse of mechanics doesn't really detract from the game though. I've paid more money than this to see some crap genre recycled into a weak storyline that just happened to have exploding bug aliens tacked on to it before, so I can say I'm quite pleased that it's just what I was hoping for: the gameplay of Civ5, but with aliens tacked on. It's nice when I see this happens to games that I like and the end result is still a game that I like.

There's a few new mechanics: miasma, orbital units, "quests" etc., but if you're already a seasoned Civ player, you'll be comfortable with these instantly.

All in all, if you feel like Civ5 was worth your money and you like Sci-fi, you'll probably be please with this one too.
