Obsidian returns with yet another masterful RPG. Returning players from Pillars 1 will find much enjoyment in the continued legacy of the main character from the first game as well as the more refined gameplay and combat. Fans of turn-based combat will rejoice in the recent addition of said game mode, warranting at least two playthroughs (one in RTWP, one in Turn Based) of the game. The story is as ever increasingly interesting, immersive and engaging as it progresses, and the ending should satisfy most people (and as with PIllars 1, there are multiple endings).

However, this game is not a godsent, flawless masterpiece. It is shockingly apparent how the publishers pushed the developers to release an unfinished product, and it is even more shocking that these issues have not been fixed over the years, even as three (!) major expansions have been released (on top of the new Turn Based mode). Glitches, unfinished questlines and quest-breaking bugs are scattered across the game and ruin immersion. It is not too uncommon also that you get softlocked in combat (Turn Based mode) when the AI cannot move (because of some combination of debuffs), resulting in an endless AI turn you cannot force your way out of.

The general consensus is that, although Pillars 2 made a valiant effort in trying new ideas, Pillars 1 is ultimately the better overall game. As much as I agree with this, I must say Pillars 2 did not deserve the poor sales it got. The future of the series, because of the sales of this game alone, is uncertain, and we might not ever get a Pillars 3. I sincerely hope this is not the case, because Pillars 2 is fundamentally a great, great game that every RPG fan should play.

Yet another game that needs two ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ launchers to play. ♥♥♥♥ off Uplay. The game itself is buggy, unpolished and random DC's from online games are not too uncommon. Fun to play with your friends, but only because it's UNO, not because the devs did a good job.

Amazingly intricate storytelling with several layers of nuance to every dilemma; choices are genuinely hard to make sometimes and consequences are very real. The world building is perhaps the most sophisticated I have seen in a video game to date, and one of the very few I know of that feels *real*. I applaud the writers of this game.

As for the gameplay, it is neither bad nor particularly great. What keeps you going is the story and the innate urge to explore and discover new things. Exploration is fun and rewarding far more often than not, but is so mostly because of the new stories and lore you will learn, rather than for the gameplay it offers.
The combat can be great sometimes - many boss battles make you rethink your tactics and require proper strategies to win. For the most part, however, you will be fighting horde after horde of common mobs that really do nothing but eat up time. You will find yourself using the same opening 10-move combo for some 90% of encounters in the game.

Despite the inherent "meh"-factor RTS games like this offers in terms of gameplay, you WILL find that the story, lore and world building is more than enough to justify purchasing Pillars of Eternity.

Chilling atmosphere, interesting story and at least 5 heart attacks along the way. Everything a good horror game should have.

Not as good as DOS2, but still in my opinion a must-try-out if you enjoyed the sequel.

The willpower/bodybuilding system is retarded tho. RNG should be kept out of turn-based rpgs as much as possible, especially when you are able to quicksave in the middle of combat.

Boring quests aside, this expansion has the best story, atmosphere and characters (Olgierd & Master Mirror) in any modern video game I have played. Easily the highlight of the game for me.
