Not quite the masterpiece many say it is, but still a very unique open air experience where knowledge is the only barrier to progression.

Holy hell, what a rollercoaster. The only reason I started playing this game was because of Witcher 3, and the only reason I played past the first few hours was because Joseph Anderson said the game just gets better and better. And he was right.

Although the clunky dialogue and the stiff cutscenes hardly improve over time, the story is fundamentally interesting. Here you have to differentiate between story and storytelling/presentation, though. The former is actually surprisingly good (even better than Witcher 3's, I daresay), but the latter is laughable (literally. The dialogue is hilarious). But *because* of the flaws of the latter it is even *more* commendable that the story actually kept me interested all the way through to the end.

Another point to make, parallel to the first, is how the gameplay follows a similar gradual-over-time increase in enjoyability. Having finished the tutorial, I let out a big sigh to the thought of having to endure a 40 hour campaign with this *garbage* combat. Well, I was positively surprised to growing fonder of Witcher 1's combat than Witcher 3's. Brute forcing your way through hordes of enemies simply doesn't work most of the times, unlike the aforementioned Witcher 3. Preparing yourself beforehand and actually utilizing the vast arsenal available can mean the world's difference. The way it works in this game is closer to a RTWP crpg than your standard third person action adventure game, and so strategy is much more important than skill. And I like it.

As for quest structure - well, it's a mixed bag. The game doesn't hold your hand nearly as much as Wicher 3, and quest markers (if they exist) are off by default. I love how it immerses you into the witcher world - you know, being a detective of sorts, snooping out information and going after leads that you find (often in a non-linear fasion) to uncover the truth. However, because of this focus on "immersion" and "authenticity" in quests, there is a ton of walking. Walk there to fetch that, then walk over there to the other side of the map to talk to this person, only to then have to walk to the other other side of the map to do the next thing. Because having quest objectives close to one another simply isn't "convincing" enough, eh? The lack of fast travel, or even a horse, can make this quite tedious in the long run.

On a brighter note, I do want to point out and commend the writers for "the big twist" in the end of the game. No, not the one thrown in your face in the end of chapter V - but the one they *didn't actually reveal*. Without spoiling anything, it simply revolves around the identity of a certain character, which you have to figure out for yourself with the clues given to you. The only thing I can criticize here is the fact that the twist is practically a carbon copy from Chrono Trigger. Other than that - a big thumbs up from me.

So, is this game better than the third installment in the series? No. Not by far. But it is, at times, more fun. And what greater compliment could you give a game than say it is more fun than one of the greatest titles in the history of video games?

Edit: Custom levels on steam workshop are some of the most absurdly surreal things i've ever seen in a video game. Roblox doesn't hold a candle to this.
