I've had a lot of fun with this game. It's a roller coaster of moods and depth that most modern day "triple A" games somehow cannot master.

If you haven't played it, I recommend this. I don't recommend often.

If you've never ridden the DMC train, well firstly I recommend starting with DMC4. Then 3. Then maybe DmC (which was sht on but totally worth a playthrough), THEN this one.

It's a ton of fun, mastering all the game mechanics, the combat, and the difficulties. The over-the-top gameplay and dialogue.. Just embrace it. Enjoy.

Early Access Review
For as long as this game has been out, there are still a number of bugs (no pun intended) that need to be fixed.

Between clipping into the ground and your camera glitching into your character model during early, frustrating fights, it's really hard to forgive.

Also how is this game considered "Unfinished" and they are releasing new content? This trend in game publishing needs to go.

Do not buy.

It's less than what you're expecting from a Battlefield game. Even less than that.

Listen to the other reviews when I say that the sheer lack of content along with the numerous bugs and issues with network connectivity is enough to make newcomers to BF avoid purchasing. Just don't!

I'll start off by saying that I've tried to give this quite a few chances to be good by playing it every way I wouldn't normally play a Left-4-Dead-Type game. I've looked at this at every angle and just can't give it a positive review.

FIRST:
- The enormous difficulty jump from Recruit to Veteran never should have passed QA. Not only is Veteran extremely difficult and not at all suitable for play with random Public players, but it simply does not work with the randomly generated element of the runs.

SECOND:
- Speaking of Public lobbies... Never have I ever had such a hard time accepting random strangers to play with. Even with Crossplay disabled (Because Xbox and PS players really don't fit with difficult Runs), getting a random stranger on a randomly generated level is a recipe for disaster. You only get one Continue.. Speaking of...

THIRD:
- Continues? Seriously? This seems like a slapped-on fix for potential "re-dos" that you might need, given previously stated grievances I stated IN ADDITION to trying to adjust to the Veteran difficulty. Sure, you can do the Runs over and over until you get it right... But this relies on you having dedicated teams to try over and over.

FOURTH:
- The AI is a joke. When you don't have a full party, expect your bot to lose a lot of health. They either teleport in front of your shooting, or freeze in front of a zombie that wails away at it until it goes down... You can imagine how bad this is on higher difficulties.

FIFTH:
- Who thought it was a good idea to blur the names above people's heads WHEN YOU AIM DOWN SIGHTS? Hard to see who you are shooting with the attachment, zombies, and other assorted chaos in front of you.

(BONUS COMPLAINT):
- I just wanna say that the character dialogue is hit-or-miss. It's fairly good, albeit still robotic. But that's expected with repeated lines for the gameplay of it. HOWEVER... Hearing and following the actual storyline is not good... Just trying to listen and follow along requires tweaking the Audio settings so you can listen above all the chaotic sounds and PCs talking.

APPEALS:
- So what is this game really? I feel like they hired Left 4 Dead creators just so they could use the same formula in the gameplay. The only real fun you have is "Deck-building" (if you can call it that) and growing your character throughout the Runs, as well as collecting that next-better attachment for your guns... Mostly all other elements of the game are just infuriating.

WHAT IT NEEDS:
1. Better lobby making. (Note: any troll can come in and ruin your run. There's literally nothing stopping this.)
2. ADJUST VETERAN DIFFICULTY.
3. Remove dimming of player tags/names overhead when aiming down sights.
4. FIX YOUR AI. It's been a MONTH now.
5. Overhauled audio... The directional sound is actually quite terrible.

So, listen. I love this game. But I only love it when it works (Valve Index) and when it doesn't Crash-To-Desktop during the most intense moments (flying in the Vertibird).

Right now, the best part about this game is how much the modding community cares, because Bethesda doesn't. I'm genuinely hoping that there is a re-release for this some day, where they REALLY concentrate on optimizing the VR experience. It's worth it... It's just only worth it when it works right.

Graphics - with mods 8.5/10
Controls - with mods 8/10
Gameplay - 9/10 ... given no crashing

Instead of 20 different releases of Skyrim, maybe give Fallout 4 VR another chance?

(Quick edit: I just realized there is no Update News for this game... at all. Terrible.)

Not sure why this is seen as Overwhelmingly Positive. Anyway.

I might recommend against this one. While it's a fine way to spend an afternoon, this is definitely not the case for $60-$80.

Here be spoilers:

(Mostly negative comments)
- Firstly, it definitely lacks in lore compared to ANY of the previous games (save for RE6, but we don't talk about that.)
- I can appreciate that it tried to pay homage to Resident Evil 4 a bit, but frankly I'd still play RE4 10 times before I'd play this one again.
- The action is over-the-top and you'd think that would be enjoyable, but then I realized I am playing with a dead-stare and kinda convincing myself it's fun.
- Can I mention that the Castle map on The Mercenaries game mode crashes on map 4? That's mighty frustrating.
- And lastly, going back to the lore, listening to the actors play out the small tithe of ACTUAL story we get is a drag. It's ham-fisted at the end, and it doesn't make any sense, and I care not for any of it.

Okay now I'll throw in some goods

(Sorta Positive!)
- I like that they brought back a currency system. Duke is MVP, but the voice-to-mouth sync is waaaaay off.
- Upgrading weapons is great! But.. don't do what I did and keep a weapon when you think it would be better that it's successor.
- We can finally move on to something substantial?

That's it. 5/10 on the overall scale for me. 10 being the first time I played Resident Evil 4, with a 1 being that time I yelled at my co-op friends while playing a very glitchy game of Resident Evil 6. Which we don't talk about.

Honestly? Not enough diversity. Very repetitive.

I shouldn't expect much from a Doom game, where the sole premise is to shoot a bunch of hell demons with awesome weapons while techno-metal plays in the background. And I was still disappointed. As you can see, I put 14 hours into the game and finished it. It was not entertaining. I regret buying this even on sale.

At least I learned a lesson about hype.

If you're already a fan of the game series, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. Don't waste your money on it as it does not contain interesting content at all.

The first gimmick of the first game was all about the loot. But at least in the first game there was a sense of accomplishment upon earning the best loot and gaining the highest level for your character. The game was difficult but do-able. The game was interesting and replayable. The DLC was worth it and no extra characters were necessary.

The second game tried to branch off of what the first one layed out. It tried to have a deep plot and semi-succeeded. (However the story felt like it was written by a high school graduate.) The content was kept very interesting with the new additions to the game and the DLC was excellent.

THIS GAME LITERALLY KILLED THE SERIES.
Nothing about this game was interesting. None of the new characters were worth a look at. None of the story was compelling from what we knew about the previous games and the content within. Nothing about how "Jack came to power and what happened then and after" seemed worth praising.
There was far too much walking around and the fighting mechanics seemed far too simple as if things were simplified. It's all too easy and seemed like a "copy-and-replace-with-different-models!"

Last funny comment: I would make someone I hated (and also loved the series) play this game so I can watch them get slowly depressed and empty inside.

1/10 because Tiny Tina talked a little bit. And so did Gauge. But -2 for not including Krieg in any way. so -1/10.

In conclusion: Save your money. Hopefully some new story writers and developers will save this sinking ship of a series.

Definitely worth getting. I hope to see the game reach its full potential soon.

Edit in 2025: It is very much still going strong. Its potential was reached and it's still going!
