Summary
While Limbus Company is a "gacha game", it doesn't follow the usual conventions you'd associate with that type of game. It's a worthy successor to Library of Ruina and I do recommend this game to anyone who is able to spend about 10-20 minutes on it each day and maybe an hour once a week.

What parts are "gacha game" and what parts are not?
The game has an energy system (enkephalin) that limits how much you can play, it features a Battle Pass system with free and paid rewards and it has a character summoning system with a premium currency called Lunacy. These are all standard mechanics for this type of game these days.

What is different however is that there is only two very straightforward upgrade systems. No trillion random items that have to be farmed, no random money currency you need "for reasons". There is also no fixed "elemental triangle" stuff; while different damage types exist, they're not tied to specific characters. Strengths and Weaknesses are very individual. Furthermore, you start the game with 12 different characters, who can assume different identities, but there are no other characters you can recruit, nor can you use two different versions of the same one. It's an interesting and unusual constraint. Similar to games like Princess Connect, there's also a Shard System that allows you purchasing Identities and Egos for characters after saving up enough of them, but it's significantly more generous, allowing you to easily obtain multiple new Identities over the course of a season and fully upgrade them. Event stories are tied to the main quest progress, which adds these stories as permanent content, allowing newer players to go at their own pace.

Is the game F2P friendly?
I would say so, yeah. You can accumulate a good amount of Lunacy for free, besides using the shards to get the things you couldn't pull you can also spark them for 200 extractions (which is less than the games i am used to). I think that Lunacy is a pretty expensive currency and probably not worth spending too much money on, unless you REALLY want something. To get the most out of the game, I would recommend buying the season pass though. It costs roughly $11 and with a season lasting around 3 months that evens out around $44 a year, or less than $4 per month.

Does the actual gameplay hold up?
Yeah, it's actually the most fun part about the game. It doesn't require as much "babysitting" and resource management as other gacha games, but it offers significantly more challenging and complex gameplay. It can be very overwhelming and counterintuitive at the beginning, but the community is very friendly and most of the people I talk to about the game are very helpful and willing to teach me the mechanics i struggle with. A lot of the battle information is given to you as a player in a very clear manner, so as you get the hang of it, it'll become less scary and more fun to outsmart the enemies.
