I really, really, really wanted to like this game. I was so stoked, if uneasy due to the development issues. Dragon Age is one of my top 3 favorite franchises and I love it so much. And that's why I am so disappointed by this game. If this had been a standalone fantasy action game, it would have been a pretty decent game. As a Dragon Age sequel, though, it sucks. The dialogue writing is so hideous that I feel bad for the voice actors who had to work with it. Roleplaying is all but nonexistent. You can be Paragon of Goodness Good, Funny Good, or Slightly Grumpy Good and they all come off roughly the same anyway and the game won't let you make anyone more than slightly miffed with you. Then there's the companions. The companions have always been one of my favorite parts of DA games and Veilguard's companions could have been so good, the bones are there, but they turned out so bland and needy that it's infuriating. Rook is basically an unpaid therapist trying to sort out the personal problems and neuroses of a group of spoiled adult-children so that they'll stop navel gazing long enough to save the world (I'm looking at YOU, Harding & Emmerich - why am I refereeing your camping trip snit during a world-ending apocalypse?!) Don't even get me started on Taash and the nonbinary issue. I'm non-binary and even I cringed through every single scene where it was addressed, it was handled so poorly.

There were good things. The world art is beautiful. The landscapes are the most visually interesting about the game. The armors and clothing that the player can access are a crime against fashion and nature, but it could have been worse. There are some absolutely wonderful battle scenes and that's really the only other place that the game shines. The Big Battles are well done and the last two missions are more like what Dragon Age is meant to be.

This game broke my heart (in a bad way, not the usual way Bioware likes to rip my heart out and stomp on it). It feels like a funeral requiem for the series. If you aren't a fan of the previous games, this probably has enough action and drama to keep you happy. It's just not Dragon Age.
