This game was a very pleasant surprise and a great discovery for me.
I'm really interested in programming but I never really searched a game about programming/hacking, I found this one totally by chance and I was far from expecting it to be that great.

The Story

First of all, I didn't even expect a hacking game to have a deep story (or even have one). How wrong I was.
When you launch a game, you start by receiving a message from Bit, telling that he's already dead if you read this, and then asking you some requests.
So you just do what he wants, without really knowing why, but hey, you're doing a dead man's last requests.
After some hacking and deleting stuff, he'll told you that he hasn't the time to learn you more, and that you have to join a small group of hackers.
Then you'll just complete some contracts, eventually acquiring some new hacking tools and learning more on how to hack things, to finally join another group of hackers, but more experienced and related to Bit.
You'll complete some more contracts, until someone contacts you about Bit and his disappearance, asking you to help him to investigate this.

So the game is basically a succession of contracts/missions, but each of them has its short but not uninteresting story.
For example, you'll have to hack the server of a company in order to delete a file they asked a hacker to get, or you'll need to hack a school server to add a degree for someone, hack the personal computer of a scientist to see if he's not working on a personal project, etc ...
Special mention for the Junebug Project (seriously, do that one, because yes, you don't have to do all the contracts to progress in the story).

Also don't forget to read the logs in /home folders, there are a lot of funny hidden things ;)

Gameplay

The game is very pleasant to play and easy to take in hand, but also very fun. Basically, you just run programs to open ports to be able to hack. Of course, there are plenty of other things to do, but I won't tell you everything, otherwise it won't be fun for you :p
So while progressing in the game, you will obtain more tools to be able to hack more sophisticated and protected machines, but the more things you'll have to do, the more time it will take, and sometimes, you don't have time because you're traced, so you have to deal with everything you know to be as fast as possible and to succeed in your mission.

Soundtrack

The soundtrack of this game is really amazing, it can be relaxing when you're doing easy contracts or pressing when you're in a hurry, it adapts very well during the game.
Shout-out for the last mission with this absolute masterpiece from Carpenter Brut : Roller Mobster.
Bit by Chris Larkin is also a very good one, but they all are :p
Also, this soundtrack reminds me a bit the Hotline Miami soundtrack, in the style, and that's a good point for me.

Pros

  • Very cool and deep story
  • Pleasant gameplay, plus easy to take in hand
  • Awesome soundtrack
  • Interesting contracts/missions

    Cons

  • There are still some bugs, like missions not starting, but it's not frequent (happened to me once)
  • A little short, but for the price it's ok. You can still start a new game and do the contracts you didn't, plus there's an alternate way to do the game ;)

Really a great revelation for me, one of my favorite game, but you might not like it if you don't like programming at all (or maybe you will like it, just try it out ;).
Buy it without hesitation, and the soundtrack with it :p
