Wait, you're telling me that in the year 2022 we're getting a new game based on an old franchise that's not only in a rare genre, doesn't go for a run-off-the-mill art style and doesn't insult its older audience or bore it with irony overdose humor like that other game did (you know who you are), while also being a cohesive and fun experience? Sign me up!
Shredder's Revenge is a labor of love. All the little details, be it references to the cartoon or other games, show respect for both the franchise and the beat 'em up genre. It might lead some people (you also know who you are) to imply that all the nostalgia coating shows the lack of creativity, but I'd argue that stringing everything mentioned above into one package where all the pieces fit and nothing sticks out, and the whole experience feels in line with the show we grew up with, well, that requires dedication and talent.
The levels never overstay their welcome and offer some variety to keep them distinct, especially in the boss department. The difficulty curve is smooth. All the characters actually have noticeable gameplay differences to fit your playstyle, and there's more than just the turtles this time! Tee Lopes, the man was killing it on the Sonic Mania OST, but here he's SLAYING with the help of some great musical guests. And multiplayer is as easy to jump right in as it gets.
By no means is TMNT SR a perfect game. I'd argue that a dedicated run button would've been good, or a progress bar with the "hold escape" enabled, the final boss is a bit of a step down from the previous ones (at least for me) and there've been some connection issues here and there (hopefully solved later). Collectibles are fun but nothing special. But as a stage-to-stage-to-the-end experience for someone who put lots of hours into TMNT3 and was a fan of the original cartoon? It improves on the classics and gives me everything I ever wanted.
Also Casey Jones.
