In short: I've got 254 hours played on my steam account and I didn't activate this on Steam until laaaaate in the dev cycle. (I've played it since the first alpha). Also I have two kids and a job and very little time for gaming in general. Yep, it's that good. Buy it.

For me, personally, this is the game of the decade, it may even be the game I'll still play on my death bed. I'm being brutally honest here, not exagerrating at all. I believe that in 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, yeah, I'll still be playing this. Unless Tynan makes Rimworld 2, and somehow makes it better than Rimworld, I'll probably play it until I die. The only other game I've ever played that kinda makes me feel the same way is Mount & Blade (which I'll also probably play forever. Or well Bannerlord, if it comes out before I kick the bucket).

This, for me, is the holy grail of gaming. It gives you the same deep deep stories and connections that dwarf fortress and it's ilk do, but it's approachable and easy to learn. It's got a great modding scene, so if you ever find vanilla Rimworld stale (I still don't ), the Workshop is a treasure trove of variations and complete overhauls. It's light enough to run OK on pretty much any decent computer from the last 4-5 years.

It's made with so much love and thought that you find new things even after years and years of playing it. Even if you think this isn't for you, even if you tried stuff like this before and didn't like it, seriously, try it.

It's pure amazing gaming goodness in it's truest form.

Thanks for the comment! I didn't intend on starting a colony again until 1.0, but I saw Tynans update video on the new super weapons and decided I had to try them for myself :P
Now me (and my 10 power armored colonists) are eagerly awaiting my mods being updated so I can move to 1.0.

It's not like I'm constantly playing it either, but I keep coming back to it time and time again, just like Mount & Blade. Like you said, timeless :)

I haven't played it even half as long as you have, but I agree that this game is timeless. The replayability alone. Albeit I personally haven't touched the game in a while (partially due to waiting for 1.0 to drop so all my mods can be updated and won't' have to worry aobut them breaking), and because I've been playing other games--but this is one you will always come back to time and time again.
