There was a lot of this game I loved, and a lot more that seemed added to infuriate the player, or downright cruel. The alternating from loving the game to hating the game ultimately swayed me to a not recommended. By the end, I just wanted it to be done.
Art, music, all fantastic as always. I loved some of the boss fights, but the padding, repetitive kill rooms, and scope creep killed the enjoyment for me. Play hollow knight first.

Maybe the new expansion will be better?

I see a few design choices and references to Neocron which makes me happy seeing as this is reaKKtor revived. A solid neutral from me, this could be good fun. However, I am old and wisened in the old KK development cycles of soon(tm), I have some limited hope that they left those old habits behind.

The controller support is somewhat janky, where the game will stop responding to the controller in the menus. Switching between keyboard and controller inputs in game is not great and glyphs are slow to update. For a 'fast' skyblade, it feels very slow in the game despite the upbeat music. Reminds me of the UE5 VR tech demo aircar:
https://steamproxy.com/steamstore/app/1073390/Aircar/
Other than that, simple, fun, fly around, J-turn mid air and blow things up.

Couple of suggestions:
If boosting is the default between locations, make it toggled by default, during the tutorial, offer to invert the pitch axis.

Fun, criminally short, beautiful music.

I really wanted to like this game and was willing to forgive some of the jank interactions. However it suffers from the same thing a lot of recent games do, too much talking in puzzles which steals the ah-ha moment.
Also, the jumps through time are blinding white light screens, which give you a headache after a while.
It's an ok tell me a story game, but it got tedious rather quickly and over stayed it's welcome with me.

Wish I had an it's alright button. TLDR: It's alright, grab this when it's on sale.

Visually gorgeous, sound and VA are also really good. Really enjoyed the story elements and the folklore of all the visitors. However this suffers from an identity crisis it wants to be an open world parkour game, at the same time it also wants to be an on rails adventure story. There is a giant open world and not much in it other than collectables. Mid to late game has a lot of copy and paste content. Early game has some fantastic set pieces as you walk through the missions and get to grips with the combat systems. However this diminishes as you get into late game.

Visually these set pieces are impressive and creepy, set the atmosphere well. Combat gets old in the mid game, and the sheer volume of collectables, spirits ..etc. isn't really worth my time. I completed all the side missions, but left anything else that wasn't needed, hunted only the number of yokai I wanted and took my time.

The jumping and climbing mechanic can be infuriatingly janky and the grappling power you unlock has arbitrary distance and angle restrictions which aren't clearly lined out you you're left aiming at ledges hoping a grapple point will spawn.

Story was good, game was good overall, left feeling this should had been a bit more on rails and less open world.

Oh and you can pet the cats and dogs. That feature is 10/10.

Early Access Review
Well this just ate 5 hours of my life like nothing. It's a fun bullet hell/survival. Once things start ramping up around level 20 ish, depending on your loadout it can be quite easy till you hit the high 70s. There are some minor issues but nothing game breaking, balancing might need looking at as I find the first level harder than the second. You can pick it up and put it down. I can put it down, ok? It's a choice...

For $2.99 CDN, the price per hour of enjoyment can't be beat, music is great, love the art style.
Why haven't you bought it already? It's cheaper than Tims...

What a slow agonising death this game had for me. Probably the best value from a game I've ever owned. Made some friends, blew up some cool things, got spooked by aliens, raced people 22,000 LY, crashed with my own hubris on high G worlds (and smashed 1T of Hutton mugs). TLDR: I'd love to recommend it, but I just can't in it's current state. it's not fun, it's work for me. [Odyssey Update 11]

The early game is a meta game of remembering your controls, everything is new and exciting, but there is a lack of narrative. You are left to fend for yourself to "blaze your own trail". If you want story rich, look elsewhere. As a space sim, it's initially fantastic and i was looking forward to visiting real star systems, nebulae and fictional locations/anomalies.

It's biggest touted feature of a 1:1 representation of the milky way is both a technical marvel and it's major drawback. The phrase I see often and still rings true; a mile wide and an inch deep. Exploration became tedious for me once I started recognising the proc-gen patterns and when I'm watching videos most of the time between jumping and supercruising, am I really playing a game?

Then the mid to late game grind sets in. And this game does not respect your time. You can have several hours or days worth of work wiped out in an instant. The Odyssey DLC introduced nothing more for me than frame drops and grindy gameplay loops, and a year later, nothing much has improved for me. As a side effect of new tech, the previous 6 years of exploration of POIs have all been wiped out unceremoniously, for us to be told, there are things out there still. You're expected to revisit all these already visited places? For reference less than ~0.1% of the 400 billion systems in the game have been visited since launch and large swathes of the galaxy remain locked for reasons.

Story is through some articles on a news feed, and Community Goals, which are copy & paste hauling, combat, or [rarely] scanning goals. Sometimes you get a needle in a haystack search of a 500LY box of systems, but they are all localised to one area. The bubble (around Sol). You will get some text story, a lot of which is narrated, but no way of discovering it organically unless you're told about it or look it up. Story is little to no consequence, your choices and community outcomes don't really have any significance.

Want to say, the soundscape/engineering on this is top notch. If you do play, play with headphones on. The Voice acting in the narrated pieces (not GalNet) is fantastic and some of the sounds like the fleet carrier jump are *chefskiss*.

However, the developer strings players along for months with either promises, no news, or complete radio silence before breaking it with either bad news or completely scrapping pledges. You know what they are not working on and their bug tracker is a complete joke. New features or ideas appear to be constrained by their engine and they appear to have hit those limits. You pray to the instancing gods in when trying to play with others, somethings outright lag your instances, like ship launched fighters.

The community can be quite polarised, passionate, and sometimes toxic. However, a lot of people are super helpful and will go out of their way to help you with builds, credits, or bouncing around on planets. Some like to help you to the rebuy screen.

In summary, like many have said before me; this game has/d great potential. But it seems to not embrace it for reasons known only to the developer, and they like to keep us away from the chocolate factory. Considering this game is 6 years old now and I still find my opinions reflect those of years/players gone by, I've uninstalled it put it to rest as I don't expect anything to change that would bring me back to play.
