This game feels like taking the best of old PC RPGs and upgrading it with modern production values. It's a tour de force.

Update:

When I found out I missed out on some stuff I really wanted, and realised I misunderstood how some quests worked, I decided to restart halfway through act 2, and I'm so happy that I did. I'm now over 140 hours into the game, over both playthroughs and about to start act 3.

The voice acting might be the best in any game I've ever played, with performances that have made me laugh out loud, or tear up. The writing is beautiful, and you really start to care about people around you, and their fate. The combat can be as tense as any real time system, making you on edge when things are difficult, and making you feel great if you barely win a fight.

And outside the game itself, Larian is a studio that purposely evades all the horrible ♥♥♥♥ that happens in gaming right now, like microtransactions, crunch, and other messed up practices that are sadly too common in the industry today.

I could go on, but it would involve spoilers, so I'm going to just tell everyone to buy this game, I tend to not like fantasy settings, yet, as is obvious, it totally got its hooks in me.

This is one of those games that are the most fun for those who have an interest in programming. There's something very addicting in trying to figure out the cheapest/best way to solve a particular problem.

I don't think any game has as high quality side quests as the Witcher 3 does. So many could be a main quest for a lesser game, and even the ones that are short usually have a bit more to them than just "kill monsters for reward". On that point alone I can heavily recommend this game, but there's so much more. If you haven't played it, do yourself a favour and play it as soon as possible.

I'm a huge fan of FTL but this game kind of fell of my radar. Looking at some videos about the best games of 2018, this was mentioned as one of the "best games you've probably missed". So, I bought it and binged it, and even though it's very different from FTL, somehow it scratches that same itch.

It's a turn based strategy akin to X-Com and Final Fantasy tactics. But unlike these, the levels are very small and you only get 3 units. Another very different trait is that you know exactly what the enemy will do the next turn, removing almost all the randomness in individual battles. You know what the enemy will attack next turn and the base gameplay is about responding to their actions while keeping your losses to an acceptable minimum.

Now, on paper, this might sound boring, but it turns every round in a puzzle and the satisfaction you get when you figure out how to get through it in a better way than you thought possible a few minutes ago.

Of course, there is randomness in the game, but this comes from what items you get, what objectives you get, what enemies you'll face. But once the battle starts, there is next to no randomness involved.

I heavily recommend it and will keep coming back to it.

This is a great game, even though many people will think it's light on gameplay. The plot is interesting, the characters realistic and I wanted to play again as soon as I finished it the first time. The actual game needs a little suspension of disbelief but once you're over that, it really feels like you're snooping on actual people, with just normal, every day secrets but also with some very big ones. This feeling can be unsettling, which is exactly what the authors intended. The social commentary is very thick but considering where tech is going right now, it's not even that exagerated. Definitely play this if you don't mind lots of reading.

I bought this game right after I came back from Rome and I loved every minute of it. The star of these games is the setting and I felt like I was back in Rome again while playing this.
