I picked this game up a bit after its release and couldn't get into it at first- I beat the first prologue, and some of chapter 1 but the game was tricky and I wasn't interested in it for almost a year, giving it another chance with more patience, understanding that it was a very tricky game. If my play time says anything about how that went, i have ~250 more hours on xbox. If the game was ever too hard for you at first, I cannot stress enough that giving it another shot with extra patience is more than worth it! (Also slight spoiler warning, getting more and more specific as you continue reading)

This game is absolutely stunning, from an adorable pixel art style, to incredibly challenging but fair difficulty, Celeste is and probably will always be my favorite game. The music in this game is by far my favorite of any game ost. It was composed by Lena Raine, who has gone on to work for minecraft and make music for them as well! Plus don't even get me started on the story, I have yet to meet someone who didn't interpret the touching story in a way they could relate to. In a literal sense, overcoming something as huge as a mountain, but taking it one challenge at a time while confronting yourself and making friends along the way.
The main progression (slight spoilers) will take you through seven different chapters, introducing new mechanics and tricks along the way as you climb to the summit. However! Once you do that, you can go back and collect 170 strawberries, 7 crystal hearts, and a cassette tape (which will unlock the B side for the chapter you found it in) And oh boy, if the b sides aren't an absolute treat! It takes what you know about the chapter youve beat already, and makes it an incredibly difficult but fun challenge! (I would really recommend doing the b-sides after beating the main game)
So! We have, 7 chapters, 7 b-sides for said chapters, and a ton of collectibles to go along with it! Buuuuuuuut, somehow, there is still more! The wonderful game devs have released free dlc content for this game, consisting of not only a chapter 8, along side another 5 berries, a b side, and heart, but also hecking C-sides!! An incredibly difficult challenge which you unlock for each map once you beat all the b sides. Thats a total of t w e n t y f o u r maps, all totally free when you buy the base game. But, somehow still, thats not all. As a last dlc, we got Farewell. Chapter 9. An absolutely beautiful, yet punishing final chapter. No b sides, no c sides, just a stunning finale, to a stunning game. Now if you think that since it has no b or c sides, it probably isnt that hard or long right? Surely it cant be that bad,,, well, everyone is different, however, it took me 13 hours to beat the chapter once. all in game time over multiple days- the devs absolutely went above and beyond for this chapter, and the music is some of the best, not even just when it comes to game osts.

Now somehow there is still even more! I feel like a broken record at this point but oh my gosh this game is just so amazing haha- Essentially, once you unlock the C-sides, you also unlock something called "Golden Strawberries". In stead of having 175 strawberry collectibles, there are now a whopping 202! These goldens are the true challenge of this game to many, where you have to go through a chapter, start to finish, without dying a single time. Definitely not for everyone, but that option being there, just to really prove your skill is an absolute plus! However as the game says itself, "Strawberries will impress your friends, but that's about it. Only collect them if you really want to!" Which to me, really sums up the extra challenges in this game. There are so many incredibly difficult things to do in Celeste, however, your main goal is just to climb the mountain, up to chapter 7! Heck, you could have your own goal of just getting to chapter 4 or anything that you feel like would be a worthy challenge for you. This game also has an incredible Assist mode for people who arent comfortable with platformers or the difficulty in general (whaaaat you cant sink 800 hours into a game? you have a life? smhh) Assist mode is very customizable and lets you enjoy the game at your own pace.

If you are worried about how hard it may be, take it from someone who's only 2d platformer experience was New super mario bros Wii. If you take your time and have fun with it, I really think anyone can have an amazing experience with this game. Plus, with tons of community content, a fantastic community in general, lots of speedrun tricks, and so so so much more, I really do encourage anyone who has the chance to really give this game a shot!!

Happy (day after) birthday Celeste!! I can't wait for the next 5 years <3
