Review Showcase
Someday You'll Return is a game that is disgustingly wonderful enough to keep the most patient and curious players stuck to it until the end or keep others halfway after a while. Let me tell you why.

What to expect - This game is way more than just a walking simulator with gore and occasional riddles to solve. There will be several things you'll be interacting with through your journey, mostly demanding to reveal the path, while others being just collectibles you can eventually find in dead-ends or just in random odd places that will even make you giggle a bit at times.

The character - Except for just a few moments into the game prologue, you'll play the whole game with this character called Daniel, a father and husband. Through the time, several memories and secrets about himself and the reason why you're on this journey with him start to be revealed. You would rather not know what kind of person Daniel is though. You’ll likely hate him through a big part of your gameplay. Not trusting and treating his wife and daughter like crap is one of his talents. And since his daughter, Stela, was often misunderstood, she will eventually face things in her life a young person has to pass through as well while in a broken home. You'll know more about her through the game.

Story - Your character's target in the game is to go look for her missing daughter in the woods, but ends to pass through some sort of "judgement" in those same woods who were once part of his past life in order to "clean" himself and regret from his bad attitudes, while keep fighting to find that daughter, to the point he will feel lost and confused through the way. Those woods will turn into the worst possible visible nightmare anyone could ever have, and what was something beautiful once, has become a vision of horror, pain and pure gore.

Approaching the reality - Daniel – quite like the typical real life story about a guy mistreating his family - yes we've heard things like that before - portrays the reality of many people, sadly. But, if you keep playing the game until the advanced chapters, you know there are specific things about someone else that the developers managed to make it in a way that may even touch players emotionally somehow, and even kind of feel sad/sorry for those game character(s) at a point. This was managed pretty well. Surely we all wished things haven't turned that way, but things have happened through characters’ lives in the past, leaving things written on paper (game lore you’ll find in game) for us to read so we could know exactly how everything was making sense through the game, while keeping in mind that the game’s characters life experiences are happening every day to someone else in real life – and that's the toughest part. Sure, after this game I can suggest Life Is Strange which is another great title, without all the gore.

Engagement - What I most loved was the fact that, the more I’ve played the game, the more curious I was to know what would happen next! It’s what it would get me stuck to it and led me to keep playing it mainly. One of those games were the more I advance, the more interesting it gets. I’ve felt thrilled and excited about it often, just wanted to keep going. But, at times, really wished everything ended faster than it did, specially during the “nightmare” sections. There are a few frustrating sections you may get stuck on for a while, but hopefully you have eagle’s eyes and enough acuteness to find a solution to reveal the code and unlock that door.

Embrace your fears - If the horror and gore parts were needed into Someday You'll Return? Keep them in, they add such a twisted touch into the game. It's not only flowers and rainbows, I would not touch in anything about it on that aspect.
That's where anxiety, gore, blood, pus, corpses, destroyed facilities, black goo, mist and creatures from the darkness will be ready to make your character's life even worse, eventually.
But that's not all, there is a mix between the peaceful part you can get from the environment of a beautiful forest with the terrible scenery I've just described above. But don't feel lonely in all of this - you will eventually meet a couple of NPCs on your way.

AI behavior - - The AI works alright. They'll move around the place and I haven't seen any of them getting stuck so far.

Controls - Similar to a point n’ click game. I would make the interaction options even more accessible/visible in some parts at least though, there were times I had to escape quickly and one or another time I wasn't sure I was clicking properly in the option to interact or they just seemed a bit too far or unresponsive.

Saving - Local saves only. Backups recommended. Multiple checkpoints. Autosaves at performed at every checkpoint. There’s a list of multiple saved games you can have at once, not too small but limited.

Sound - Appropriate sound effects and environmental sound. Unique and exquisite music, well placed for each occasion. General sound may become too loud in certain occasions, specially during intense moments.

Features - Diverse collectibles to pick up. Steam achievements. In specific occasions, you can pick up a guitar to play songs you’ve found through the game. Keep track of things through the journal. Unlock encrypted pages from Stela’s (Daniel’s daughter) diary and read them. Combine diverse items or put your hands in your tools to interact with the world objects and solve things or craft new objects. Create different potions through the herbarium, after unlocking recipes and collecting diverse plants on your way.

Not a bug-riddled game - As the time of my review (~34 hours), I’ve experienced around 4 game issues/bugs if I remember, which is not bad at all. Reloading the game fixed them and led me to close checkpoints.

Choices matter - Multiple different endings – you’ll end the game with a specific one, depending of certain actions or decisions you'll take through your gameplay.

Portraying Czech Republic - I've found interesting how the developers highlighted parts of their own country, and managed to even put inspired parts of it into the landscapes, monument(s) and other landmarks in this game. It shows the attention they have for the gems of their own place - I like this detail. Also, you’ll find info boards by the forests, which will let you know more about the points of interest nearby, if not the current map of the location you’re at in game, which is always something extra that enriches not only the game itself, but also our knowledge.

Looks/Performance - Stunning graphics, the colors are smooth and overall this game holds quite interesting landscapes worth of some screenshots. Smooth edges and nice textures. The lighting is quite acceptable. While one or another time the game would have a couple of hiccups or not reach the fps cap, I can tell it is pretty playable for me in full settings, for such kind of graphics it has, it has behaved fine. It would stutter a bit more in the forests at times but it eventually has stopped after a while.

Daniel can be a very irritating person through the whole way almost. A sailor mouthed man who's stubborn and doubts about women. People around him seem to be there to help him though. Creatures are there to punish him. I'd say it requires patience to play these sorts of games, but you need to enjoy it as well. I don't think I've enjoyed so much a game of this specific type like I've enjoyed Someday You'll Return!
For such a small dev team, all the time and other resources they've put into it, they've crafted a precious gem for players to try! Plus, I've noticed that they even lowered down the game price to half of what it was for months since the release. How cool is that?

The Beast looks like a rustic Predator!

I recommend this work of art.
