A meaty and satisfying turn-based strategy game which takes the interesting elements of the Battletech board game and imports them into a digital format, streamlining the gameplay. The campaign story is by-the-numbers but does give you the freedom to build your own mercenary company from scratch, recruiting pilots and buying mechs & equipment as you see fit.

Mechs can be customised to fit a variety of play-styles and all have useful applications if outfitted well. Experimentation is encouraged by the lack of weapons and equipment readily available, as they are lost forever if destroyed on the battlefield, forcing you to use weapons you normally otherwise wouldn't. Battles are visceral and require a great deal of thought to maximise your firepower to its full potential and complete objectives, earning you credits.

However, there is no option to use tanks or other vehicles (the Battletech board game is supposed to be a combined-arms wargame after all) without resorting to mods, although in early missions you do fight against tracked and wheeled vehicles. Also in a battle your forces are limited to just 1 lance of 4 mechs. This means some missions are extremely difficult for no reason other than the game artificially throttling your offensive options, for instance not giving you the choice to overwhelm the enemy with large numbers of small, nimble mechs. This means late-campaign missions are a slog where you are required to bring only your biggest and most power mechs, so the freedom to outfit your merc company get more limited as the game goes on.

Still, overall an enjoyable experience, with varied & tactical gameplay that will interest fans of hex-based turn based strategy games, but with large stompy robots. :)

My wife didn't play video games before I introduced her to this one. Then I come home from work at 1am and she's almost finished an entire singleplayer session. She looks at the time all bleary-eyed and utters 'Just one more turn...'.

What have I unleashed.

[The Starter Edition of Rainbow Six: Siege is only available until the 19th June, after that the following rant will be obsolete]

I can't speak for the Standard or Gold Editions, but I tentatively recommend the Starter Edition for the excellent gameplay expressed in other reviews. Haven't encountered any cheating thusfar but I seem to be lucky in that regard, your mileage may vary.

HOWEVER, I am going to break down the Starter Edition for you. At first you get two free operators and 600 R6 credits (Ubisoft's in-game currency to buy with real money... 600 is, at time of writing, £4). This is enough to buy between 2-to-4 extra operators, depending on whether they are on sale, and is not a lot to go on at first, but you can get a lot of Renown (in-game currency you earn instead of buy) quite quickly from single player missions at first.

When you enter multiplayer though, you will be looking at 5-to-20 minute games, earning about 200 Renown per successful mission (unsuccessful missions only bag you :maybe: a couple-dozen Renown), and here's the kicker, a new operator is 12,500 Renown. Given there are 12 Operators on Offence and 12 on Defence (excluding the 4-to-6 you start with), that's 100+ hours to unlock all the base Operators, give or take, and that isn't even counting the 8 DLC Operators that cost 25,000 renown or 600 R6 credits!

Now you can squeak this down by only buying Operators on sale (usually 20%-70% off), or by buying more R6 credits, but if you've gotten to the point where you're buying 2400 R6 credits (£16 for 16 or less Operators, but beware sales are few and far between so it will take a while to collect them) then you have basically bought the standard edition but with 4 less operators to choose from, and it will still take considerable time to unlock those remaining 4.

If you've decided that you don't want all Operators and you're happy with just cherry-picking a few choice ones (I recommend some Youtube research), then Starter Edition is the way to go, but don't think it'll be a cakewalk to catch 'em all. And be aware you maybe kicking yourself come next Steam Sale ;)

EDIT: After 100 hours I have all but 2 base Operators and none of the DLC ones. I still recommend the game, the Standard edition regularly drops to 50% off (£15) and the Starter edition is no longer available, so price-wise this is no longer an issue, just do not get the Gold edition. The extras are not worth the inflated price, and are cheaper to purchase seperately if you really want them.

I threw a hamburger at my son's face, then burnt my wife's flowers in the BBQ. Game of the year!

In all earnestness; great story, challenging & engaging gameplay (best played with a pad), but be warned it's very short (~2 hours on your first run). However, there are plenty of challenges and achievements to unlock during/after you've completed the story, and the modding community is constantly growing, so there's loads of replay value here.

Ultimately, because it's so funny and full of heart, I would recommend this to anyone. Also, forget Portal, this game has the best theme song ever!

It's still in its early stages of development, but this is excellent MP PvP 'Mech stompy-shooty action, think Mechwarrior-lite but for the CoD generation. Don't let those last two words put you off though, this is more a thinking-mans FPS, albiet far more easily accessible than that aforementioned titan (pun-intended) of 'Mech action games.
The starting 'mech is good enough for you to go toe-to-toe with the big boys and win sometimes... after enough practice (as with any PvP the difficulty is all over the place depending on whom you're engaging), but the lack of variety in armaments, and the slow drip-feed of unlockable customisation will force you to purchase your own specialised 'mech fairly early on.
That being said, it's relativly easy (and more importantly fun) to earn enough in-game credits (through personal achievements and winning matches) to buy a lovely non-recruit 'mech with fancy new weapons and special abilities, but the micro-payment option is always there if you think actually playing games and earning nice things are beneath you. All-in-all it's a very non-intrusive F2P model, and the game never pesters you for real cash, although that is, as with all Early Access games, subject to change.
I heartily recommend this little gem, out of all the (many) F2P games on Steam, this one is the most deserving of a test-drive, along with Path of Exile. It's fun (because 'mechs always are), easy to get into (with a training mode and Co-op AI-bot destruction for upto 4 people, if you want to ease into PvP), and the F2P model is so well implimented you sometimes forget that you can buy your way into nice 'mechs, just because playing the game and earning the credits is so damn fun and un-grindy (compared to, say, Planetside 2, which can sometimes be just a little bit too grind-tastic). Plus the art assests are new and interesting, the world has a distinctive vibe and the whole game is briming with personality, which is difficult to do when everyone you meet is a big stomping robot with guns for arms.

The perfect third-person shooter. Not necessarily for the gameplay or the graphics (although these are very good) but for the flawless story that highlights everything that is wrong with modern military shooters, making you stop and think about all the things you've ever done in computer games in the name of entertainment, then turn inwardly and question whether it was all worth it, and what it has turned you into (yes it's harmless entertainment, but then why does that entertain you hmmm?). Everyone and their dog has positively reviewed this game, and for once it's not overeager praise heaped onto a speeding bandwagon, it's a fantastic peice of storytelling, basically the Citizen Kane of videogames, and genuinely fun shooter, which as you'll find out is a massive ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ problem you mass murdering psychopath! In a generation or two, people will look back and ask their parents "What was it like to live in a time when a self-proclaimed hero-nation's military goose-stepped around the word thinking they were putting wrongs to right, when all they were doing was ignorantly applying violence to an already ♥♥♥♥♥♥-up situation, which actually needed some clear thinking and civil discourse to address their issues?" to which you'll reply "That's a pretty verbose sentence for a 9 year old!". And then point them to this game. Which you shouldn't because this game is rated M for 'Madness'.
