Early Access Review
It's still in its early stages of development, but this is excellent MP PvP 'Mech stompy-shooty action, think Mechwarrior-lite but for the CoD generation. Don't let those last two words put you off though, this is more a thinking-mans FPS, albiet far more easily accessible than that aforementioned titan (pun-intended) of 'Mech action games.
The starting 'mech is good enough for you to go toe-to-toe with the big boys and win sometimes... after enough practice (as with any PvP the difficulty is all over the place depending on whom you're engaging), but the lack of variety in armaments, and the slow drip-feed of unlockable customisation will force you to purchase your own specialised 'mech fairly early on.
That being said, it's relativly easy (and more importantly fun) to earn enough in-game credits (through personal achievements and winning matches) to buy a lovely non-recruit 'mech with fancy new weapons and special abilities, but the micro-payment option is always there if you think actually playing games and earning nice things are beneath you. All-in-all it's a very non-intrusive F2P model, and the game never pesters you for real cash, although that is, as with all Early Access games, subject to change.
I heartily recommend this little gem, out of all the (many) F2P games on Steam, this one is the most deserving of a test-drive, along with Path of Exile. It's fun (because 'mechs always are), easy to get into (with a training mode and Co-op AI-bot destruction for upto 4 people, if you want to ease into PvP), and the F2P model is so well implimented you sometimes forget that you can buy your way into nice 'mechs, just because playing the game and earning the credits is so damn fun and un-grindy (compared to, say, Planetside 2, which can sometimes be just a little bit too grind-tastic). Plus the art assests are new and interesting, the world has a distinctive vibe and the whole game is briming with personality, which is difficult to do when everyone you meet is a big stomping robot with guns for arms.
