I remember playing this a number of years ago now, but the memories are still pretty fresh. Going into Last Man Standing races and just obliterating anyone in my way, playing Deathmatches like it was Twisted Metal all over again, and cruising around sporting my sponsor paintjob.

To break the game down into simple, easy to read numbers:
Graphics: 7/10 - The game is simply gorgeous for it's age. Easy to look at, but definitely a bit bright at times., and some textures are also a little meh.

Music: 8/10 - This one's subjective for sure. But I won't lie, the music really fits the atmosphere.

Gameplay: 9/10 - Remember Twisted Metal? It's kind of like that, but there are circuit races available, too! Go round and round blowing up opponents with rocket launchers, miniguns, and whatever else you can strap down.

Story/Campaign Mode: 10/10 - The game is completely under your control. You can select what type of races you want to do regardless of where you are in your playthrough. Feel like blowing ♥♥♥♥ up? Last Man Standing or Deathmatch. Want a straight up race? That's an option, too. You're in control. Play according to your preferences!

Overall: 8.5/10. This game packs a wallop. And I cannot describe how much fun this game brought me, even the online component at the time. They say you win some, you lose some. This time around, if someone's winning... Just blow them up.

So... After several updates, this game has gotten to a point where "mixed" reviews are something to be proud of.

While the game still isn't perfect, and I personally feel like it's lacking a few QoL things here and there, inventory space and storage capacity in a base, the game has won me over like few before it. (Looking at you Resident Evil 2 Remake.)

The frame rate is pretty steady except for a recent bug that's easy to fix. The game might use 1 core on your multi-core CPU, but simply editing a text file to switch 1 to however many cores you have, save, and bam you're golden. I did have a crash that cost me all of 2 minutes of progress, but that was one time. Though it could happen again, and be more devastating. Otherwise... It's a pretty solid game. Think Starbound, but in 3D. Though it does get me thinking... Dungeons would be a real treat.

The base building is very easy, if a little finicky. (Except for those storage containers good god, Hello Games please sort that out I beg of you.) The quests are relatively interesting to follow, and plenty of side-quests to take up, alongside repeatable missions for rewards.

All in all, it's the kind of game you can immerse yourself in for a few hours. It's got base building if you like settling, space combat if you're into that, FPS combat if a little basic. Give it a try if you like sci-fi. (Hey, that was a sick rhyme.)

TL;DR - This game is a nightmare. In all the best ways. It doesn't shove jump-scares down your throat, it relies heavily on tension and action, while still being a good way to terrify yourself. The game loved itself in 1998, and it loves itself now, remaining very faithful to the original.

Story: The game takes place way back in 1998, following the events of Resident Evil 1 (And Remake, which acts as a sort of soft reboot), tasking the player with stepping into the shoes of both Leon S. Kennedy, a rookie cop arriving in Raccoon City looking to figure out what happened seemingly overnight. And Claire Redfield, the sister to Chris from the first game, who aims to locate her missing brother, and former STARS member. Both of them work together to try to escape the nightmare as it unfolds, hoping not to succumb to the same fate as the rest of the city.

Gameplay: Resident Evil 2 is very similar to more recent titles, like 5 and 6, using an over the shoulder camera unlike the old-school fixed camera angles from the Playstation 1 era. Despite this, enemies remain terrifying and bulky enough to withstand enough damage that being swarmed feels like a death sentence. Much like Remake, you have defensive options that allow to escape grab attacks, but with the added benefit of being able to finish off weakened enemies. Ammo is somewhat scarce unlike the original RE2, allowing the player the option of using gunpowder to make ammunition relevant to both characters.

Audio: The music isn't often present, which in my opinion is kind of a downer, because the music that IS in play is wonderfully orchestrated and very fitting for the atmosphere. On the other hand, weapons sound meaty and powerful, giving the impression that you're not just dealing surface damage. The voice acting is on point this time around, sounding much more natural if a bit dramatic. Characters actually express emotions and have a lot more depth than most entries in the series. General sound effects are lovely to listen to, giving life to the world around you. From rain to soda cans rolling on the floor, it all sounds daunting, giving way to a fitting atmosphere. The addition of the Soundtrack Swap DLC brings a very nostalgic feel, bringing back old music and sound effects for some elements.

Graphics: This game is pretty, that's the shortest way to put it. But with tons of options and sliders, the game can run on older computers with relative ease, or you can see multitudes of small details on higher end rigs. Textures are smooth and have quite a bit of depth. Cloth looks like cloth, windows shine and reflect, lights glow and flicker, and even the enemies look grotesque and mutated. They did not skimp on the gore either. You'll find plenty of body parts, giblets, and dismemberment here, leaving one to either gag at the sight, or revel in the carnage one can inflict.

Difficulty: 3 difficulty modes allow players to try their hand at surviving the night. Assisted gives players access to aim assist and weaker enemies and more plentiful ammunition, whereas Hardcore will force players to deal with limited saves, reduced ammunition and items, and enemies that seem to be made of steel. And they can hurt you like it, too. The latter is the truest Resident Evil experience, also allowing the player to unlock a few powerful secrets if they can earn a high grade. There are also a few unlockables, and not one DLC is remotely required to enjoy the game or it's difficulty options, resulting in a nice balanced mix for all comers.

Overall, the game is worth your money if you're into shooters, horror, and corny storylines. Despite the high notes of the story and dialogue, this is still a Resident Evil game. Plenty of camp, plenty of cheese, and plenty of gore.

Think Osu! but with RPG elements and a story.

It's really quite refreshing to attack an enemy and not take a ton of damage because I suffered an unlucky critial from a boss. It plays quite handily with your mouse (Keyboard use seems to be non-existent, but that's aight), though I'm sure a touch screen would be heaven.

Would recommend if you like Alice in Wonderland asthetics, a swipe system over RNG, and a short story. (Other reviews make it out to be between 2-3 hours long, but for the price tag that's not bad.)

I think I understand someone a little bit better now. Maybe not.

Look, just get this. It's thought-provoking, it's helpful, it might make you understand something as well. The narration is perfect, the story is interesting, and it's an entirely different direction... No. It's an entirely different dimension than The Stanley Parable. All you do is walk around and listen. That's it. But that's all you need. It doesn't need to give you more. I felt like I was going to cry a little bit at times. Legitimately.

As of writing this review, until about August 30th, it's on sale on The Humble Bundle for a dollar.

9/10.

I can recommend this game on the story, music, characters, and dialogue alone. However, some issues with the game make it a bit more difficult to stomach than it should be.

Let's start with the good. The music is wonderfully done. Every note, every pitch, every tone is really well done. Plenty of times I felt immersed and even felt attached to the game despite it's flaws. The dialogue was fitting and interesting, and I even felt emotions. Over robots. Tin cans that follow programming made me feel somber. That's a new one, but I'm impressed.

The dialogue was very well written making the characters far more interesting than the metallic bodies they really are. The protagonist seemed a bit more lively for a robot than she ought to have been but it really helped shape her throughout the game, and it was a constant rather than a quick evolution over the course of the game. Like some life-altering events suddenly took place and she became someone else entirely or something

The story was awesome. And at the end I actually didn't expect the twist I witnessed, but it made me even more interested in the sequel or update, whichever the devs decide to go with. It started out innocently enough, making me think it was going to be a simple tale. But that quickly changed and evolved as the character experienced many things, and we the players are along for the ride.

However... The bad really stung a little. The combat. The combat is simply clunky, unintuitive, and unchallenging. It felt more like I was playing a 3D flash game rather than a new indie title with potential (It has plenty, don't get me wrong). Simply draw your weapon, pop into camouflage or cover, and click when the enemy shows their head. That's pretty much it. Click until you win.

The controls are... Sub-par at best. I understand this is a 2D side-scroller, but there's a clear need to have a visible cursor of some sort indicating where my mouse is. You know, since the game keeps track of it's location. It felt disappointing having to aim based on feeling around for my cursor, sliding it around to finally get enough movement to aim all the way up or down.

And finally... The puzzles. A core mechanic of the game. These suffer greatly as they're hardly conveyed to the player properly and are instead "click everything until something works." This isn't a good puzzle mechanic. There isn't any penalty for just clicking and shooting everything. You could literally beat the game with your eyes closed if you had enough patience. There's no reason for me NOT to just wander around aimlessly trying to figure out where the disembodied head goes, or where to use a robotic arm I found. It also doesn't help the game doesn't give you any real hints as well, asking the player to simply feel around and press buttons until something works.

To make an example, a spoiler: At the very start of the game, you'll find a fellow combat suit on a cross with a body inside. You need his cloaking device as yours is inoperable. The game states you clearly need his to get by a security device further up the road. But in order to get it, you need to trip the alarm, use a robotic arm to reach through a solid black wall to get a card-key, then leave, coming back LATER to get the cloaking device.

All in all, I'll be playing the sequel and do recommend this game to anyone looking for a good story that changes it up a little with well written dialogue, story elements, and well performed music. But the combat and puzzle solving needs work. My only complaints are puzzles should be less difficult if there's going to be a lack of direction and 0 penalty for clicking on things like a curious child, and the combat could benefit from upgrades beyond shooting faster and aiming for the head.

Overall, 7/10. Really good. Doesn't suffer from any serious bugs, good story, music, and dialogue. Walkthroughs will not likely cheapen the experience if you get stuck as you can simply click things until something works anyway. Combat is simple and easy, which makes up for it being clunky.

Unlike other users, I won't compare this to Grand Theft Auto or complain about it not working on a Mac. Instead, here's why you should consider this game despite the mixed reviews.

+The driving is pretty solid with a controller. It's a driving game, don't go using a KB+M.
+The SHIFT system is just plain badass. Losing a race? Just throw a bus at them.
+The story is very cliche, but hell it's fun to notice the gradual mentions.
+Some missions can be really difficult, but the only time I actually ended up mentally handicapped was when I forgot I could use SHIFT. So the difficulty curve is, so far, fair at 5 hours in.
+The game lasts about 9 hours, so it's got some meat to it without dragging on and on. There are a ton of stuff that could take you a solid 20 hours to do though, like stunts and dares.
+The cars look and sound bloody amazing. It's from 2011, but I had to make sure this game would run smoothly! Sure enough it does. Optimized well even for it's age.
+There are a few abilities you can unlock as you play through the game, and a few upgrades if you want to make things interesting.
+The garages are pretty neat, giving you the option to buy multiple garages to increase your income over time. You can buy new cars from lisenced manufacturers. Audi, Nissan, RUF, and Ford to name a few. Take your pick.
+The music is definitely good. Fitting given the atmosphere.

-Barriers. Trying to pass through them is fine and won't actually do any real harm, but you're locked out of areas of the city until you progress. Only takes a couple hours though, but it's still not a good thing.
-The story is locked behind a number of side missions most of the time, even though this is explained in the story early on it still feels like a poor development choice.

Overall I'd say it's a solid choice if you're a Wheelman like Tanner, but don't forget this is a DRIVING game. You won't be hopping out of your car any time soon. Not that it's a bad thing. Being behind the wheel is a much better place anyway.
