I have recently gotten to Act II as of this review.

This is a much spicier game than Hollow Knight. A lot of feedback has been given regarding enemies doing two masks worth of damage per hit. This was really surprising at first, but you might notice that these fights typically give you a lot of space to heal during them. They are fights that are punishing, swingy with your health pool, and somewhat frustrating, but I also find that healing is something you have a lot more time to do in this game on average when compared to Hollow Knight. It's something to get used to though, for sure.

The runbacks aren't so bad. This might be helped by my love for 2d platformers in general and a high willingness to repeat routes to perfect them over time (Celeste, specifically modded Celeste, is my favorite game/platform of all time) but I found that you can pretty deterministically get through zones regardless of how tedious the runback seemed and, with maybe one or two exceptions, they became a non-issue.

I'm having a fantastic time. The game is spicy, and I can only play it in bursts since it is somewhat stressful, but like a hot curry the spice serves to bolster the flavor.

Edit: Pro-tip: You would be shocked how much screenshake disorients you. Fights in this game are more chaotic than before. Consider turning it off if you're losing yourself when taking heavy damage.

It's everything people have said about it and more. What's here is crafted with an insane amount of passion and love, and narratively it's one of the most compelling worlds I've had the pleasure to spend 30 hours in. This game will be talked about for decades.

Early Access Review
Still early on, it's...quite early access haha. I'm looking forward to seeing how the game develops. It is very evident that it is a COMPLETELY different game from Path of Exile 1. It's good that they're developing both because both of these games will cater to different audiences. The game feels quite overtuned at the moment with how much health the bosses have and how quickly you die just in the first few zones. They're going for a souls-like feel and it will be interesting to see how the community around this game develops.

I'm having a good time, and this review is positive because I'm enjoying the ride, just know that if you like the gameplay cadence of PoE1...it'll be a lot different. Oh, and there's A LOT of boss fights. It's clear that this is a much more boss-focused game.

The game is really good, truly the "just right" between Diablo and Path of Exile for casual aRPG players who play a lot of games and are able to burn out on this genre. The game is...NOT bug free, there are plenty of weird interface and graphical issues along with strange multiplayer misbehavior like my party members not being able to see me at all, but now that the server issues are ironed out, I can heartily recommend this game. It may not suck hours of your life away like PoE does for hardcore fans of that game, but it will kill enough hours to be worth its full asking price. I'm a fan.

Oh but pick Circle of Fortune imo. Merchant's Guild needs some work right now...great ideas with it though.

Probably the best 2D platformer you can play today, especially if you take the modding scene into account.

Edit: It's probably time to update this review, as this is easily my favorite game of all time now. The base game is a good and vibrant challenge with a relatable character and a good pacing and level design. It's very good, but oh man...the modding scene.

Mods crack this game wide open and truly show what the engine the devs created is capable of. The game is programmed in such a way that even though there's only a few buttons for this game, there is a myriad of intended and much more unintended mechanical depth. With just WASD movement, a jump, a dash, and a grab button, you can do like 50+ different types of movement tech. Some of it is very zoomy (Madeline does not have a speed cap) and some of it is really weird and obviously unintended like some of the momentum conservation tech people put in their maps, but it's all so interesting. If you've ever seen a speedrun or TAS of this game, you know what I'm talking about.

The modding scene is fully embraced by the devs. They have played modded Celeste on stream and THANKED THE FANS FOR MAKING IT. Compare that to another huge corporation with a famous platforming series of games and the difference is night and day.

If you like endless creativity through fan mods, you're in good company. If you just like to speedrun the base game, you're in good company. If you want hours and hours of incredibly cool stuff to play with a pretty much infinite skill ceiling...you'll find it here.

Download the 2020 Spring Collab and Strawberry Jam to get the most comprehensive look at what the game has to offer. SJ is newer and much prettier, and a LOT more polished...some would say too polished. They're both worth playing.

Beyond those, there's tons of maps from some very talented people who may as well be making their own games at this point.

Ahh I'm rambling and just kind of dumping what I love about this game now but just play it. Play this game. Please play it. I'll certainly be playing it, probably forever.

Weird game. It's like they got 50 modders to contribute to it and didn't QA anything, it's just weird. Gun game is a blast. Recommend.

Performance issues aside, game is fantastic. Incredibly overwhelming...it's a dense game that's best enjoyed slowly. I will be playing this for years, a bit at a time.

The game is really cool so far but holy crap, the keyboard support is atrocious. Space should be a rebindable key. The escape key should be the menu button, not spacebar...

I'm leaving a positive review but considering this is a PC release, this is pretty unacceptable. There is an AutoHotkey workaround though that I stole from the game's discussion forums:

Good game. Fun to play, good story. If you're expecting ponies, there's only one and she's technically a unicorn. Either way game is good don't be weird.
