From the first impression, I can tell you this is potentially one of NRS's best fighting games Rivaling the likes of MK9 and X and is telling that the most shallow character of this game is more complex than most of anything in MK11.

but that being said, while I am not having issues with the port myself, there is a good amount of people who experience stuttering on systems far above recommended. It is greatly disappointing that NRS continues to provide lackluster Computer ports on their initial releases and sometimes take as long as Title Updates to even fix them.

Despite thoroughly enjoying this game myself and experiencing no issues, I heavily discourage purchasing this game immediately, least you willingly take the risk of buying a Stuttery unplayable mess (which is especially unplayable for a fighting game).

Update: well the performance update is out making the game actually playable which is great. so now I got no problem making this review positive.
but that being said this isn't roses and gumdrop, cause:

1) It REALLY shouldn't have taken this long for this update to come out
2) Doesn't change the fact that wayforward knew the game was unplayable before launch but decided "f*ck it" and launched it and didn't acknowledge it till it got too controversial
3) This performance update f*cked with some of the games logic where hit stun and physics were completely different than before, so a lot of combos aren't possible anymore

But hey.. you know what.. THERE'S A BETA TOO (mostly) FIX THAT AGAIN!!

Like god d*mmit Wayforward This game is f*cking great and with the beta branch it's the most playable this games ever been. are we gonna wait another 6 months for the games logic to function as it did before the performance update? and when it gets patched, is there gonna be another issue like the game overriding your computers BIOS or something?

And once again, even with the beta branch, that's EXCLUSIVE to PC users. so if you got it on console you don't get the beta.

Though I will be fair that the games performance is more vital than what combos are possible in the game, and even at it's most restrictive this game is still a great beat'em up. It's just super frustrating we're having this issue where after half a year when the games performance is FINALLY fixed, now the combos we practice are not possible unless you get the beta branch. and even THEN it's far stricter than it was before.

I don't have much trouble recommending this game anymore since i do feel the game content does warrant the price, if not then on a sale. but I would still keep all of Wayforwards past actions and this current ongoing issue with the games Physics in mind when purchasing it.

ORIGINAL REVIEW (5/12/2023):

Having 100%'d this game shortly after it came out, I can say that I do very much enjoy the game and wouldn't have trouble recommending it at all for the actual qualities of the game.

The caveat comes in when this game launched it was not only locked at 30FPS but it had baked in stuttering.
but no problem, right? they provided a beta branch which helps performance significantly and makes the game [Mostly] playable!! and they've insisted that the patch is coming as well so surely the game should be completely playable in no time right? right?

Well even with the beta branch it is FAR from perfect:
1) There are still minor performance issues and hiccups in the game
2) Online Multiplayer has actually been effectively unplayable ever since this game launched. so if you're like me who has friends that also play beat'em ups from across the world, you're pretty much SoL
3) This is strictly assuming you are playing the PC Version. afaik the beta branch does not exist on the console versions. so again, get f*cked

and you know what, all of that would be forgivable if not for 1 extremely DAMNING thing... They announced the patch and insisted that it's coming but with no release date and somehow less communication than Team Cherry with Hollow Knight Silksong.

On top of the team acting very defensively, banning people on their Public Discords for criticizing the unplayable nature of the game [and not even in a particularly harsh way either] and actively even DENYING that the game was unplayable when the game first launched until the following day where they said

"Hey, here's a beta branch. :)"

It is very disappointing that Wayforward continues to sit on their cloud, and just passively going "oh yeah, the update is coming.." especially when they knew ahead of time the glaring issues with the game since the Japanese release was also unplayable, and yet the Western Release has the exact same issues when it first released.

While I can appreciate that updates can take time, I have to massively call into question if they are actually busting their *ss off with this update when the beta branch was released just a day after the game launched on steam, making the game SIGNIFICANTLY more playable.

I am not necessarily gonna advocate for the boycott of Wayforward products from here on, but if this is how they are gonna act in the Foreseeable future, then I would be weary of being excited for any new Projects they announce.
It's even more heartbreaking cause as I said, I think this game is Incredible and hell, when it gets fixed I have no issues Recommending it. but till then, I guess it's just gonna stay broke till Wayforward can finally be f*cked to fix it.

Sad.

You know, when I heard a sudden Sam announcement being made by modders. I generally was not expecting anything good, having played and 100%'d Sam 4

But having beat the game I can pretty much confidently say this is my Favourite of the main line series. and It pretty much improves on all the problems I had with Serious Sam 4

The levels in Siberian Mayhem are some of the best designed in the whole series being both decently big while still interesting to explore. as well as have proper Enemy Encounter Designs where enemies feel like they properly compliment each other in each given encounter. (unlike Sam 4 where they were hastily slapped together).

And even set pieces were generally improved like the Mech Section in the 2nd level which feels properly paced not out staying it's welcome before too long.

The 2 new additional weapons (The crossbow and The Burner Ray Gun) are very fun to use, if not a bit overpowered. but they fortunately do not feel like a crutch and just another fun option for you to use.

Now problems I have with the game is that at launch, it did perform a fair bit poorly. with some adjustments it ran alright but even then specific moments such as the final level still performed a fair bit poorly.

The Devs have since updated the game and their most recent patch as of February 15th 2022 the game significantly performs better with some very minor hiccups during REALLY BIG Encounters.

But something that is actually massively disappointing is that you do not get the Mini Gun till the VERY last level of the game and there is no secret to get it early like the other games. so you'll only ever get to use it near the end of the game, which does kinda suck imho.

As well as far as I can tell, you can only get the Auto Shotgun only in a secret specifically near the end of Level 3 during it's optional objective, Which isn't nearly as disappointing cause it is a decent reward for exploring, as well as you pretty much have it for a good half of the game.

But I think it's odd you have the auto shotgun for longer than you have the mini gun.

and Personal disappointment which isn't too damning but is still saddening is the classic Laser Gun and Sniper do not make an appearance in the game at all. which I can understand the 2 new weapons are pretty much a replacement, least with the laser gun, I feel they still would've been fun option to have.
But I feel this is an issue that will be mostly rectified once The Devs properly add workshop which I believe they've confirmed they're working on.

Overall: I have no trouble personally recommending This game for it feels like a proper sequel to the Serious Sam games way more than Serious Sam 4, and Timelocks commitment to improving on the Performance Issues, as well as put genuinely time and effort into this game instead of shoving it out the door to make a profit much like Sam 4, shows that some Russian Modders care MORE about Serious Sam than Croteam themselves...
Which is both funny and sad.
