I came from the "golden era" of PC FPS gaming - unreal, quake series, and the original DOOM. It was the original and it was a basic format that all games copied since. It is a basic "run and gun" game play with maps to explore, secrets, and just solid controls. Simple, but responsive. Quake built on this after Doom and then Doom 3 tried to give us a creepy version of the original with jump scares but just didn't grab everyone as much.

This Doom is a great re-visit to the original formula. It gives you run and gun - it gives you secrets to uncover. Also some solid FPS platforming. And the visuals really hammer it home. Audio is also great.

And for me, the icing on the cake is the multiplayer. On the surface you may just see more space marines...but lets recall who gave us the original space marine FPS - Doom. So iD has every right to bring this into the fold among your CODs and Halo copy cats.

The gameplay is straight out of the late 90s-early 2000s. Its fast, its brutal, unforgiving, but also very satisfying. After playing so many games that get a little stale with very flat maps, or lacking in control, this game really delivers. You get your double jump back, you get your arsenal of weapons, and trash talking via the built in mic support.

If you played Unreal/Quake online back in the day, get this.

If you enjoy very basic FPS single player built around "Run and Gun", get this. It is the original FPS experience.
