Starfield is an ambitious spacefaring RPG from Bethesda, and while it delivers on many fronts, it’s not without its flaws. It’s a massive, sprawling experience with breathtaking vistas, deep lore, and the kind of exploration that only Bethesda can offer, but it occasionally stumbles under the weight of its own ambition.

The Good

- Incredible World-Building: Starfield’s universe is vast and meticulously crafted. Each star system and planet feels unique, with rich lore that gives life to its many factions, cultures, and mysteries. The sense of scale is genuinely awe-inspiring.
- Exploration: If you’ve ever dreamed of charting your own course through the stars, Starfield scratches that itch. From scanning planets for resources to discovering hidden outposts and alien ruins, there’s always something new to see.
- Character Customization and Ship Building: The game lets you personalize almost everything, from your character’s background and skills to your spaceship’s design and capabilities. The ship-building mechanics are a highlight, allowing you to create vessels that reflect your playstyle.
- Combat and Progression: Both ground combat and space battles feel fluid and engaging. The skill tree offers plenty of options, letting you shape your character into anything from a cunning diplomat to a deadly mercenary.

The Not-So-Good

- Loading Screens: For a game set in the vastness of space, the frequent loading screens can pull you out of the immersion. Traveling between planets or entering a building often feels like a chore.
- Uninspired NPCs: While the main story and side quests are well-written, many NPCs lack depth. You’ll meet plenty of characters, but few leave a lasting impression.
- Repetitive Planets: While there are countless worlds to explore, many feel empty or procedurally generated, with little to distinguish them beyond the surface.
- Bethesda Jank: It wouldn’t be a Bethesda game without a few bugs. While nothing game-breaking, you’ll encounter the occasional glitch or awkward animation.

Final Thoughts

Starfield is a game that rewards patience and curiosity. It’s a slow burn, but for players who love to explore and immerse themselves in a richly detailed universe, it’s a dream come true. That said, it’s not for everyone-its slower pace and occasional shortcomings may frustrate those expecting a flawless experience. As you can see by my total playtime, I am rather fond of this game.
