Baldur's Gate 3 is a flawed adaptation of the 5th edition of Dungeons&Dragons. I'm saying flawed because some of the mechanics have problems thats making some abilities useless.
- For example Shield Bash doesn't work and it has been like this for some time.
- Sentinel + Polearm Master interactions are also problematic because when enemies enter your reach it doesn't trigger on time to stop them from approaching you or your loved ones.
- There are many magical items that is making game very interesting but also creating problems with interactions which makes some abilities trigger when they should not (Dueller's Enthusiasm states that if you have an empty hand you can do use additional reaction but with shield on my hand even though I use my reaction on my turn it still triggers attack of opportunity but it doesn't trigger a second attack of opportunity if you don't use it in your turn -this is not a problem but its hard to follow the mechanics happening behind since you can't see them in game-) which is making the game hard especially for people who are not familiar with the 5e.
- Many of the spells and feats are changed compared the TTRPG version of the system which is also making it confusing.
- Monk fists are magical but sometimes game seems to take the damage as bludgeoning making some enemies resist it while it shouldn't. (When you examine enemies it also states it as non-magical bludgeoning resistance but still resists monk fists. I don't know if it happens consistently.)
- At first levels the encounters are very though in Tactician difficulty especially if you are trying some wonky builds but later on in higher levels game gets a lot more easier even with some weird builds. (especially if you are playing even one strong build in the party, we have a Paladin/Warlock and I think he can solo the game easily at this point)
- This one is totally personal, I didn't like any of the companions even though I loved their stories. I didn't find their personality interesting somehow but I remember loving nearly all companions in the BG 1 and 2. (as I said this is how I felt, your experience with them might the opposite)
Despite all the problems of this version of the game I'm loving it. And I would highly recommend it since the problems and bugs are neither gamebreaking nor immersion-breaking. You can see my post as heads up while you are creating your character and I'm confident that they will fix these problems in no time. I just hope that they will continue supporting the game and give us other subclasses and maybe hopefully Artificer class.
