Update 10/18/2021: With BHVR now supporting NFTs with the Hellraiser chapter, I can no longer recommend this game. Leaving my 2017 review as it stood below as a reminder of what once was, but I cannot recommend it at the current time.

There's a lot of negative reviews about this game, typically complaining about some feature or another, and I'll admit there are things I will argue need changing (and have, strenuously, on the Steam forums for this game), but that doesn't change the core opinion I have of this game:

This is a good game.

Four survivors verse one killer. Survivors want to power five generators and escape through the exit doors, the killer wants to hang them from hooks until they die. Creates an engaging game that varies wildly from match to match. With eight killers (at the time of the review) and nine survivors (at the time of the review) there's a lot of variety to pick from, and you aren't going to see everyone play the same killers the same way. It's a cool concept and is done pretty darn well, better than F13 (which I haven't played but watched a lot of gameplay of to see if it compared) and dead similar asymmetrical titles like Evolve.

HOWEVER: I want to put out a disclaimer here...you are going to feel useless at first. This game does not cater to new players at all (despite the developers trying to...sort of...) You're going to be run in circles by survivors if you kill, and get found and killed fast by the killer if you survive. It's a fact. The game is super grindy too so you'll need to play for a while to compete with viable perks. It gets better. I promise. Just keep going, and play both sides. You don't gain an appreciation for killer if you never play them, and vice versa. A lot of the community only does one side, and it shows in their gameplay and attitude...after all, if you never see how easy/hard it is to find people in certain places as killer, how do you know you're picking a good hiding spot? How will you understand how survivors keep juking you if you never try to juke a killer?

Community is fairly toxic, but there are plenty of reasonable people in the game too. Developers are constantly trying to balance the game, with mixed success, but the game is a heck of a lot better than it was a year ago and I have faith they'll (eventually) get it to a good state on the whole. it's worth the $20, and the DLC to this point (Halloween, Flesh and Mud, and Spark of Madness) are all worth looking into.

Bottom line: It's a good game, but rough around the edges. Worth it in my opinion. If you decide to get it, I'll see you in the fog...as a friend...or foe...
