Tom Clancy's The Division
[Positives]
- Great atmosphere. The snowy map and Christmas lights look incredible.
- Great graphics and art style. This somehow looks better than most of Ubisoft’s recent games.
- Cool and immersive HUD.
- Online co-op.
- Being able to upgrade the base is pretty cool.
- Good weapon and loadout variety.
- Good ability variety.
- Solid music.
- Nice attention to detail. Shooting glass causes it to break very realistically.

[Mixed]
- Combat mechanics themselves feel decent, but enemies can be very spongy. Mix that in with level scaling enemies and even tankier elite enemies, and combat can get incredibly annoying.
- The game design takes a lot of inspiration from Destiny, but in some bad ways. There’s the obvious looter shooter elements and PvE/PvP, but then there’s also the bad stuff like the repetitive holdout/defend missions and bullet sponge enemies.

[Negatives]
- Requires a Ubisoft Connect account.
- Online only.
- Monthly events locked behind Season Pass.
- Microtransactions and loot boxes on top of paid DLC in a paid game.
- $30-50 is too much for how old the game is.
- Repetitive gameplay. Most missions consist of ‘go here and shoot these people’, ‘go here and defend this for 2 minutes’, or ‘go here, hit a button, and then shoot these people’. There isn’t much variety or thought involved with the gameplay.
- Side missions are boring and repetitive. Some of them are also timed for some reason. The majority of your playtime will be spent on this side content since you have to hit level 27 to play every story mission without being under-leveled.
- Some of the combat design is terrible. The game has a bad habit of making you face ridiculously spongy elite snipers from long distances. The combat can be absolutely awful at times, especially when playing solo.
- Some weapons have terrible accuracy, this is especially frustrating with snipers or scoped long rifles.
- Bosses are pretty terrible. They’re boring tanky bullet sponges with OP weapons. Usually to beat them you just keep running around the room in a circle and shoot until it’s dead. They function like normal enemies (although sometimes with dumber AI) and have nothing really special other than having unique models.
- The story is nothing special and isn’t worth paying much attention to.
- The final mission is a mediocre non-ending.
- Items marked as junk become unmarked whenever you quit the game or logout.
- Some of the perks are pretty useless.
- The characters aren’t anything special. Some are fairly annoying. Dr. Kandel is incredibly irritating and has a constant attitude even towards the player.
- Forced DEI content. Your acting commander in this game, Faye Lau, is a partially blind disabled Asian woman who is also a “Christian” lesbian. Dr. Kandel is also a non-practicing Jewish lesbian. There’s even a side mission where you have to investigate the disappearance of Kandel’s missing ex-wife.
- Movement controls can be somewhat unresponsive sometimes.
- Throughout the game I had occasional crashes.

[Conclusion]
It’s visually stunning but the gameplay is meh. It’s very similar to Destiny and Gears of War. It’s got a lot of Ubislop tropes, collectible spam, bland side content, DEI characters, etc. Get it on sale with friends. Otherwise, skip it.
6.5/10
