While not the usual kind of RPG from Obsidian, this is a wonderful visual novel style game. At first it looks like it might have been a satirical kind of adventure, but instead it is a beautiful, touching and intimate experience of life in Bavaria during the later part of the Middle Ages, although this fictional representation of a small Bavarian town could be extrapolated to connect is with other similar places throughout Europe at this time. The characters are realistic, have depth and I felt almost as if I had become a member of this community. Pentiment has a unique artstyle inspired by medieval paintings and manuscript art is not only gorgeous, but also helps further draw you into the experience and aids in giving you a greater sense of what life might have been like back then and how people viewed the world. Its meditation on art and how we connect with our ancestors through it and our representations of representations of history somewhat reminds me of Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev, with the interactivity and changeability of the narrative through various playthroughs adding an additional layer to this concept. This game was sincere, well researched, a labour of love and totally lacking in any cynicism without being naive make this a refreshing experience in the Western world where usually our ancestors seem to only receive mockery and contempt in most of our media today. This is a must play for anyone that is even remotely interested in Medieval European history or who just wants a good story.
