Star Trek Online is a game I struggle to recommend. But I do recommend.

STO, being a very generous free to play game gets a lot of passes because you really can do everything for free. There is some dubious sales mechanics in this game for certain starships and traits and such but every bit of worthwhile content, Even advanced can be done using a T5 ship with a good fitting using the reputation or mission gear unlocks. Ontop of the like.. 5 free ships per year that are top level (T6) and the event campaign they now do each year giving you absolutely free access to even promotional ships which are from the lootboxes with as low as 0.2% drop rates. It could easily be the most generous f2P game out there. (there is also the fleet ship T6 route using reputations but that is a grind, Technically free but by Q is it a grind!)

It has a lot of bugs, It has some real cryptic jank and animations being wonky. But it has incredible stories, Very passable combat and a team that recently has spent a good amount of time fixing niggling bugs that the previous lead could not have cared any less about. They release some really well done stories every 3 ish months and honestly since I don't have to subscribe (though I am a lifetime sub) I don't see a negative.

The game does like to throw it's loot box prize messages in your face and it's store is a little bit of a minefield but the Reddit is an incredible place to get advice for questions on how to best spend your money should you choose to.

anyway, ye i recommend.
Hope to see you in space, happy trekking.
