Is it a Sonic game? Is it a Phoenix Wright-esque clues-and-questions game? Is it a weirdly complex meditation on friendship and control that was somehow greenlit, created, and released for free in time for April Fools' Day?

Yeah. Play it, it's free, it's great. It took me an hour (I turned on invincibility) and I cried at the end of it. Not joking. This feels like a gift.

I'm gonna be honest: Aven Colony reminds me of nothing so much as the more recent installments of Tropico -- individual ploppable buildings, a smallish amount of lawmaking, and a medium-length campaign. Is it a perfect space colonization-city builder? ... Well. It's really good. I wish it had more buildings, more laws to make, more hazards to fight... but it's also half the price of a triple-A game (and often on sale for even less). It shares some negative qualities with Banished, namely the fact that once you solve the few issues the game presents, it's fairly straightforward, and unlike denser city builders, your creative freedom is limited to some extent by resource scarcity (and building variety).

But I'm having lots of fun, and genuinely hoping for an expansion or two soon to fill in some of those details. If you enjoy micromanagement city builders and sci-fi atmosphere, I wouldn't hesitate to pay full price for this.
