Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is a game where the second one introduced me to the Dub Pistols back in 2000.

Back in 1999, Neversoft, a studio that has long since been consumed by Activision like the alien from The Thing, created a skateboarding game licensed to Tony Hawk, who was at the time, considered probably the best Skateboarder of his generation.

I was a Muska guy, but that’s neither here or there.

This game branched off into a sequel which improved on the first one in every way, and practically spearheaded skateboarding into the main stream. This turned Tony Hawk into a household name, and created a video game empire that lasted for over a decade until it finally petered out because Activision thought I needed more stupid plastic ♥♥♥♥ in my hovel.

I already build Gunpla, don’t test me.

It was basically banger after banger, with the series hitting its peak with Underground and Underground 2, and then slowly just kind of dwindling away. Outside of myself, I’ve never actually met another person that played Proving Grounds. Then Ride happened, and. Yeah.

Now, a billion years later, we have a remake of both games put into one game. They tried bringing back the first game before with THPSHD but that just kind of sucked, but now we’re here! So how is THPS 1+2?

What you get is every level from Tony Hawk Pro Skater and Pro Skater 2, most of the skaters (Spider-Man is missing), and a bunch of other cool features like Online mode that nobody plays and a create a skater mode that’s kind of lame.

Each level gives you around 2 minutes to complete a few objectives as well as get as high of a score as possible. These objectives can be anything from grinding a certain type of object, to smashing through windows with your stupid face, to just being a general nuisance. Its fun, and keeps the maps varied and entertaining.

Gameplay is simple: X/A makes you go foreward, releasing it lets you ollie, Square/X is your kickflip button, O/B for grabs, Triangle/Y for grinds. I don’t know the keyboard controls, I’m not going to find out. These let you do your tricks, including ollies with up/down on the directionals and other tech like wall riding and stalls. You mix these together and keep your combo going with grinds and manuals to get the biggest multiplier possible, the longer you go, the harder it is to keep going as grinding and manual balance becomes more finnicky as the combo goes on.

This gameplay loop carried the series for almost a decade.

You’re not really getting two games, this isn’t Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 and Pro Skater 2, its more like a Tony Hawk Proskater 2x kind of situation where you’re getting one game with the levels of another game attached to it.

I played for around 3 hours or so and something always felt off about this game, so I went and played THPS2 on the Ps1 instead. I played it for 6 hours straight. Didn’t even feel like it was that long.

THPS 1+2 feels too clean, not grimy enough. It feels like it lost that 2000s Skateboard mojo along the way. Even wiping out kind of sucks since your character just sort or rewinds midway through so you can get back into it.

Its a fun time, though, I don’t hate the game, I just don’t like it as much as I liked the other games. Apparently other people see it the same way since we’re apparently not getting a THPS 3+4 or an Underground collection.
That second one really hurts me in the nuts. Like getting kicked by a stiletto.

Also, multiplayer is dead, I couldn’t find a game. Maybe there’s game nights? It would be nice if there was. Shooting the ♥♥♥♥ with random people in THPS 4 and Underground was like a coming of age experience for me. Still talk to some people I met on PS2 online back in 2004 or so.

Shout out to Franky.

If you don’t have any other choice, or are one of those weirdos that can’t stand older games, then THPS 1+2 is actually a really good way to play THPS. Its a good buy when its on sale, but for me there was always this sneaking feeling that something was off, like the gameplay just wasn’t right or the mood and atmosphere was too clean and nice looking.

It looks good, the game is fun, but I think I just wanted more out of it.

Tony Hawk: Existential crisis 1+2 gets 7 botched 900s out of 10.

Skateboards evolved from wooden crates.

Also, my favorite board brand is DarkStar.

Totally get you and completely agree. If feels... functional, but soulless.

I forgot Proving Grounds existed. Wish I could say the same for Project 8, or remember a thing about Wasteland other than that it came out. And Ride... damn.
