It's similar to Escape From Tarkov, but quite different as well. My main comparison is while they strike the same itch for me (Rust without giving up my life), Hunt gets rid of a LOT of the micromanagement, which can be good or bad. Also the weapons are WYSIWYG besides scopes and blades, whereas EFT has a crazyyy weapon modification system. However, the western setting and more supernatural PvE appeal to me greatly and I definitely recommend the game.

There are a wide variety of tools and equipment that you can bring, in addition to your primary and secondary weapons, to help you with whatever playstyle you are going for. There's barbed wire for fortifying bosses you are banishing, flash grenades and shotguns for storming buildings, fire to burn your enemies corpses with and many others. Any weapon is effective as long as you use it for its role, although there are some fancier, nicer guns - they're also more expensive to compensate. Patience can payoff if you get the drop on another player with a headshot or flanking. However at the same time, a lot of your actions in this game are pretty loud (unless you take traits) so you don't get sneak killed that often, besides the odd headshot from a bush. My only warning is expect to die. A LOT of the players I've seen probably have about 150hrs+ of game time, many have more like 750hrs (I'm up to 1200 now). Basically that means they know the maps great and what most people are going to do, so it can be quite hard at first if you are a new squad vs a seasoned squad. Thankfully most of the seasoned players prestige and often have to reset gear, meaning you don't see automatic mosins and semi-auto shottys every game.

Also, just play with randoms instead of solo. The game plays best imo as teams of 3 and I haven't had too many people who "ruined" a game. Duos is pretty good too, but it gets super campy, especially on a single bounty target. Many good players are picky (I don't mind normally), if you have a garbage loadout you're going to get a garbage team and have to search like 25 times before everyone stays. You need to spend money to make money. Make sure you have a first aid kit and consumables (I do 2x healing syringes and 2x explosives) every game and a knife/melee. (it's really only like 100 hunt dollars for that added on to a free loadout and if you can get 3 clues, you'll make 150).

One of my favorite early game weapon combos is the Springfield/Pax, recommended if you are new. Springfield is one shot like the Sparks or Martini, but has a super fast reload and lots of spare ammo, so you don't need to be quite as careful with making your hit. Cheap and easy way to learn to quick swap too

EDIT: Also, there are now 4 bosses, 3 maps, a few new weapons and some weapon variants, plus things like customizable ammo types and more exploration-based pickups to find (trait points, bloodline XP, variant unlocks, etc.). The game is in quite a better state than a year or two ago, imo.
