Every time I tried to play this game in the past, I lost interest after a while, it's now August 2019, and the last update received introduced VR amongst other things, and all I can say, is... What a game changer... The controls feel so intuitive and natural, and it's almost like the game is easier to play with VR controllers than it is with any other input device.
Bottom line, and the reality of it is that I've gone from a max of sporadic 20-30 minute game sessions to such long sessions that my controllers run outta juice, and I have to stop playing. (for a short while while they charge up again)
To put things in perspective...In the last 3 days I've racked up close onto 24 hours of game play in NMS since it's 14th August update.

For those without VR, it's still very much worth the play, it is far from the bare-bones "What the hell am I supposed to do now" game that got released years ago. It has sooo much more to it now, and it unobtrusively keeps you moving forward, if moving along to a story line is your thing.

For me, just been in the game, playing and experiencing everything that is now NMS, is enjoyable...
harvesting, mining, building, flying through asteroid fields, taking on would be attackers out in space, interacting with the various alien life forms, learning their languages, trading, upgrading, researching, exploring underground cave systems, planets, and different star systems finally has me sold on the game.

Then...
I would not have recommended this game before, which is also why I refrained from giving a review on it back in the day when I first purchased it, but I think Hello Games and their NMS title have bounced back from their initial disaster of a release, and have earned a decent review now. (Even if there are still a few minor bugs that need to be ironed out (As with most games out there))

Now....
I'd say go spend your money and fall in love with this colourful relaxed exploration (and/or survival) game.

June 2023 Update... I'm still in love with this game. A gamification of a future reality... What a blast...

If you want casual, it's got it, if you want action, it's got it, if you want to go get lost, you can, if you want to do it with others, you can, want to solo it out, go for it...
Just want to stare at the world... sit down and relax.
Another gaming history gem.
