Sonic Youth is an alternative rock band in America, formed in 1981 in New York. The current lineup is Thurston Moore (vocals, guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals and guitar), Kim Gordon (bass, guitar and vocals), Mark Ibold (bass) and Steve Shelley (drums). The group has a musical style that blends rock, avant garde, post-punk and avant garde compositions. Icon of music and alternative culture in America, his style is considered very unusual and creative experiments based on melody, with influences from punk rock and hardcore. Early in his career, Sonic Youth were associated with the New Wave scene in New York. Part of the first wave of American bands of noise rock, Sonic had his own interpretation of the punk philosophy, more focused on style "do it yourself" than the sound itself. They have found moderate mainstream success, and are considered one of the pioneers of alternative rock groups. Sonic Youth was inspired by the guitar symphonies of Glenn Branca (with whom most of the band have performed), the proto-punk of The Stooges, MC5 and The Velvet Underground, punk poetry of Patti Smith, the Krautrock of Can, the psychedelic garage rock of The 13th Floor Elevators, as well as avant-garde composers like John Cage. Often the band is hailed by redefining what a guitar can make , using a variety of alternate tunings and modify the instrument, with unusual objects such as sticks and screwdrivers as a way to change your tone.
