NEWS: Nintendo to go mobile
The big N is planning to team-up with mobile company DeNA in a deal which will see brand new Nintendo games appear on smartphones in what is a massive shake-up of Nintendo’s current business.

Nintendo has fully embraced the modern smartphone era, as they form a capital alliance (meaning both companies buy a significant amount of each other’s stock) with Japanese company DeNA, who operate Japan’s leading games portal and social network Mobage.

Nintendo’s revealed in a recent press release ‘both companies will develop and operate new game apps based on Nintendo’s IP, including its iconic game characters, for smart devices’.

As of yet no titles were mentioned specifically but no prizes for guessing what the most likely candidates will be (one rears red and blue clothing and is a plumber). Nintendo has made it clear that none of the games will be ports of existing titles but will instead be all-new games designed specifically for smartphones and tablets.

‘The alliance is intended to complement Nintendo’s dedicated video game systems business and extend Nintendo’s reach into the vast market of smart device users worldwide’, claims Nintendo.

You may be thinking at the moment that this move is Japan specific, but reference is made to strengthening DeNA’s ‘gaming business at a global scale by leveraging Nintendo’s IP’. The two companies will develop an ‘online membership service’ that works on smart devices, PC, and Nintendo consoles and which will launch this autumn.

‘In order to create completely new game experiences for smart devices, all Nintendo IP will be eligible for development and exploration by the alliance’, says Nintendo.

‘As these consumers enjoy the unique kind of gameplay found only with Nintendo, they will have the opportunity to explore even more premium experiences on Nintendo’s dedicated video game platforms. Information on upcoming games and availability will be forthcoming.’

NEWS: Calling all Indie devs
Some big news for any Indie developers who are looking for a well known franchise to start themselves off with.

Currently Square Enix is encouraging indie developers to pitch ideas for new entries in the Gex, Fear Effect, and Anachronox series.

Collective is Square Enix’s recently started crowd-funding development initiative, which from 2014 has been helping to get indie titles published that are voted on by the community.

‘It *doesn’t* mean that we’re looking for straight-up sequels – we’d love to see different takes on those universes’, states Collective project lead Phil Elliott.

‘What would Gex look like in a side-scrolling adventure, or a turn-based strategy? So feel free to mash up genres, and get creative.’

This is a similar idea to the fairly recent story regarding Monolith Productions’ offer to lend out its Condemned franchise to any indie developer that want to make a sequel, since they’re unlikely to make one themselves. Square Enix isn't as generous however as they’ll take 20 per cent of the net revenue from sales of the game, as well as licensing and distribution fees, and 5 percent of the crowd-funding total.

Whether any indie developer is interested in making more of these games is difficult to say; sci-fi role-player Anachronox was certainly well thought of in its time, despite some flaws. Fear Effect 1 and 2 were also relatively successful action adventures, using Resident Evil style fixed camera angles. Gex is the most known of the franchises, starting out as a 2D platformer and then earning two 3D follow-ups.
